I read through the website rules and I was just curious as to why the custom avatar button was shut off, where one could submit their own personal graphic. One of my passions are graphics, web art, ect., and I enjoy looking at everone's distinctive signature graphic.

Best Wishes!

I'm not 100% sure but it's probably due to the fact that it's for sale in the store. Costs 1200 points apparently...

Yeah, I wouldn't want to pay 1200 points just for a custom avatar... Too expensive, IMHO.

David I read where you can have your own avatar with 125 posts in the edit profile section, I guess this really bothers me because nobody will know what I look like!

Robert are you running around trying to post as many posts as you can so you can get your own custom avatar? By the way, I tried to look at your new blinkie but the page came up as an error for me.

I dropped it from 1200 to 800

SmokingTequila, you already have 201 points and you are a new member. The point is that it really is not that hard to gain points with a little patience.

We didnt want to make it TO EASY either...

First of all, thank you David for submitting that thread, I read everything over, which was very enlighening but offended me even more.

Chief you still haven't addressed my question, I don't care to hear about baudwidth, space or anything else. Yes I went to the store, I don't have time nor do I care to worry about points or whatevers, this to me was not cool and was offensive to me, not only am I a Webmistress but a business woman besides. My reason for joining WT was to learn, ask questions and perhaps help someone else, plus have some fun besides.

Giselle...

...."I don't care to hear about baudwidth, space or anything else."

Well that's the answer. Part of it is the "or anything else," but you don't want to hear about that.

We do have a graphics forum where graphics are allowed to be posted.

...."First of all, thank you David for submitting that thread, I read everything over, which was very enlighening but offended me even more."

What offended you?!

..."My reason for joining WT was to learn, ask questions and perhaps help someone else, plus have some fun besides."

And because you don't have a custom avatar, you can't do that!?

I really am sorry your offended that you can't show a custom avatar right away, but you are not treated any different than anyone else here.

If you want a custom avatar that bad, just do what you said you came here to do ..."to learn, ask questions and perhaps help someone else, plus have some fun besides" and you would be there in no time.

P.S> Custom Avatars STILL have a size restriction about the same as the existing avatars...

Thank you Chief for your response!

I know exactly what space, baudwidth and whatevers are, because I own, maintain and design two websites of my own with help from my other half, which is just part of the computer business world. Graphics take a lot of space, I work with them everyday, of course you need to limit the size of the avatars, I can understand that as well.

Before I signed up with your website, I signed up
with the number one site on the list of Google. Very very easy to sign up with, now I was looking at everyone's custom avatars, again very easy to customize and submit your own personal avatar or keep changing your avatar for a newbie. No stores there for points, just everyone posting away. Now from a business point of view I can understand the strategy of the store on your site to some degree, but not fully.

I know that this is an old topic, but there are a few things that I want to clear up...

No, whenever I join a new forum, there are a bunch of topics that I've not read since I just joined, so I go and reply to all of them. Then, when I'm on the second or third day, I've read them all, and on these forums, not that many topics come all that fast, so I slow down.

Yeah, same reason as above, with the new topics and everything.

BTW, I uploaded my blinkie to a new server, check it out:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/dawg4u/tequila_finish.gif

And I think that you should lower it even further, like maybe to 300-500 points.

WOW! Had no problems seeing your blinkie, just awesome! Very very nice!

I was just teasing you by asking if you were trying to post as many messages to gain points so you could have a custom avatar.

As far as custom avatars on forums if they offer them, only one other site in their rules said you had to post 25 messages before you could have a custom avatar. The subject matter wasn't all that interesting to me so I didn't even bother to sign up as a new member. The other day I signed up with another forum had my custom avatar all ready so when I introduced myself it came up with my name, most forums are like this.

Giselle I really don't understand what is so important about an avatar! I think most people come here to learn and get help or help others. I work with all kinds of graphics, it just isn't that important to me to have an avatar.

Pleased to meet you Crow!

You are absolutely right, we are here to learn and share ideas, help when we can.

I also work with graphics on a daily basis, do a lot of surfing and always appreciate the art work that goes into making webpages, everyone is so unique and creative. With the avatars it makes everyone very special and distinctive, plus it's also easy to know who it is when reading posts by their own distinctive avatar. But that is my own opinion.

Best Wishes,
Giselle

Nice to meet you too. I'm getting closer to My own avatar, with every post I make. I didn't realize I could use one of my own untill you mentioned it. The more I thought about it. The more I liked the idea. Soooooooo I going to work on one of my own.

Crow,

I have a real long ways to go for my custom avatar, but have one already made up in the meantime.

You have a real nice website, just browsed a bit but bookmarked the site so I can go back and look more extensively.

Hi Giselle,

I am a member of two of the most active webmaster forums on the net -- one specializes in free webhosting and the other specializes in domain names. The former requires users to have 150 posts before they can even have an avatar! If you make some thoughtful posts and contribute valuable information here at Webmaster-Talk, it's possible to reach 800 points before you have 150 posts. The latter has a store similar to the one here at Webmaster-Talk, and like the other forum, you do not even get an avatar to start out with. You have to reach 1000 points (I think) before you are able to even have an avatar. Just thought you might find that interesting...

I agree, however, that the limit should be lowered to something like 600.

OK, OK... I have lowered it to 600 points. That will be the last drop!

Keep in mind you get 50 points for referring a friend (you can find your custom referral link by clicking on "Tell a friend about the Webmaster-Talk Forum. It uses your referral ID!" at the bottom of the forum.
