Basically, i'm talking about the cute little boxes on the right showing Member Info, News and Rules, Sponsors, etc...
I can see that you can close each box individually for one page, but how about, in your user preferences, you can set to close some permanently...
And you could also change what links there are in the Member Info box, so that you could take out the "Your Profile" Link or add a "Mark All Forums Read" one, and so-on...

I think this would keep (the few) users that leave here.
Oh, and on a slightly differnet slant, how about offering different sets of smilies which you can shoose from... or even haveing one big list of them all and you can pick exactly what smilies to display....

What do you think?
Are these ideas practical? Are they even possible?

Thanks for the suggestions.

This may be alright with a couple of the boxes, but it could not be an option with Premiere Partners and Webmaster Resources since this could practically eliminate the shown links for our partners and advertisers. Note that you can mark all forums read with the link at the bottom, or mark a single forum read with the link in the dropdown box at the top of the forum called Forum Tools.

When you make a reply, click on the smiley face and scroll to the bottom of the box. Choose --Show All Smiles-- and you'll find a page that has all the smileys available.

I mark all forums read by using the link in the "Quick Links" drop down menu, but 1 click will always be faster than 2...

But, maybe I dont want to have to do that everytime and I dont like any of the few smilies shown... I still think all my ideas are good...
Anyone else agree?
I definatly think you would attrct more members if you were the first forum to do this kind of thing...

Any collapsable item that you collapse should remain in the collapsed state as long as you accept cookies. I collapse almost everything. Edit: You are correct, there was an error in the template that makes the side boxes there re-open no matter what. I'm fixing that now. Edit2: It's fixed now

The Mark Forums Read link would be fine by me. I usually scroll to the bottom of forumhome with my "End" key and click the link there, but I can see how it would be useful if it were up in the user info box. Edit3: Added the Mark Forums Read link.

As for the smilies, interesting idea. I don't think it's a need for any special hacking at the moment, however. If I'm hacking away one day and I'm in "the mood", then perhaps I'll add it in.
