I have been trying to do a search on RSS and XML in the php forum. No results are being returned.

I find it hard to believe that there has been NO discussion on either of these topics. Other searches seem fine.

Do I have an incorrect search setting or something? Can some else try this?

OK,,,, the real question is how to aquire RSS XML feed data and get it into my php script so I can parse and format. Does this vary with service provider? Does php have any functions for this type of operation?

Thanks.

Interesting. I ran the following queries in the WT search: "XML" "RSS" "XML RSS" and got no results for any of the searches. The notice returned was this:

Quote:
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search
That's interesting -- maybe the problem is that there are too many threads discussing these topics as opposed to the opposite.

Next, I used the Google search on the search results screen to perform this search and got 6,200 results: "xml rss site:webmaster-talk.com"

Chroder, Dave -- do you guys have a take on this?

EDIT: Merged duplicate threads.

Short searches put a larger load on the server then longer ones (short words like "the" appear often, so the number of results that are returned are huge).

There is an option that allows certain short words, like XML and RSS, and I will add these terms in a short while.

If there are any other terms that should be "unblocked", then let us know and we'll make sure to unblock them.

Definitely -- thanks for the explanation, Chroder. I can think of a dozen other terms which might fit in, but the foremost one in my mind might be CSS. I know we have a forum dedicated to the topic, but many people are just discovering CSS, so I would recommend unblocking those three terms at least.

Thanks!

These are what we have thus far:
Quote:
vb vbb php sql xml rss css asp sql pr
Please let me know about any more. To get these to take effect, we must rebuild the search index which is quite server intensive. So it'll be best to wait until we have a good list before rebuilding. Until then, these terms are no longer too short -- but they will not return any results from any posts made before they were updated.

No problem and thanks for keeping us updated. Maybe we should hit the mods with this question as well before we put the server to work.

A minor detail, but you have sql listed twice. I don't know if doing so would make the server work any harder...

Thanks again.

I think so too. We need Tim to start the re-index anyway, Dave nor I have permission

So I do Shouldn't be a problem, I believe it's a simple strpos() type thing in PHP which checks if the word should be indexed. Either way, I'll remove it when we have a larger list.
