I'll have to agree with Chris on this content is king. If you have good useful informative content or something that is extremely entertaining people will visit your site pretty much no matter where you advertise it. Photo and art galleries do really good online. Stores that sell anything unique. Uniqueness and originality are really good.

Facebook is great for fan pages personal profiles and limited to 5000 friends still more than enough if you are going for quality.
MySpace is good but only if you have like 100K friends. (You might also get some really wierd blind dates) MySpace is everything that isn't cool but tries to be cool about the internet. It's the worst of the popular sites online so why not use it sell stuff.
YouTube post a free commercial or two. If you don't mind people trolling your videos and leave rediculous comments which will invariably really tick you off.
YouTube is a really fun site to use.

You could use ping.fm to increase soome traffic .but then also you need a lot of good content to post there.

Yeah, I agree with webspace completely. MySpace is no longer worth the hassle unless you're dealing with A) Music or B) Teenagers. :-) That's a tad harsh and overboard on my part, but I definitely prefer Facebook.

Cris is right great content is the best but if no one is exposed to it then it is useless, of course it could randomly become viral by someone digging it or tweeting it but that is unlikly. So you should make friends on digg and twitter and retweet them and digg them along with commenting on others posts and your friends will increase. These will be high quality friends because they are active and will do the same for you. Hopefully

I can only mirror what everone else has said, without the good content, then there is not much of an audience. the ways of going viral in promotion could vary, but mainly social networking promotion is the way to go. you could also try 'pinging services' which you can get if you search for them on google. Also you could try link backs? if you have good content, other blogs will link you as credit or something? Just a thought.

social tool? the famous facebook,myspace.friendster all those social networking sites. you just need to make and your ideas famous in your own way.

Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, a forum, a blog, etc. can all be great social media "tools" for building online communities and driving traffic to sites. Each has it's own niche and application. Having the vision to know which "tool" to use for which circumstance is the key.

So there really is not single "best" social media tool IMO.

Hi, Although I agree with what you guys are saying, if you don't get your site noticed it doesn't matter how good the content is. I think the question to ask here might be 'what is the best tool to use to post to multiple social bookmarking sites?' thereby increasing your chances of getting noticed.

Digg: you can get massive traffic if your story goes viral
