Hey guys:

I have a friend who lost 2/3 of his traffic from slipping from #1 to #5 for the keyword phrase "credit card processing by phone". However, we were looking at his title tag - and it reads:

<title>Small Business Merchant Account - Accept Credit Cards by Phone</title>

We thought that maybe we should change it to look like this:

<title>Accept Credit Cards by Phone - Small Business Merchant Account</title>

The former - the keyword phrase we're going after gets cut off (within the title tag) and we don't think the bots are seeing the whole title - if we change it, then maybe we're thinking that we'll regain our #1 position again, or at least move up within the top three. However, with Google being so unpredictable - we are afraid to touch anything and might just go strictly by expanding his website with putting new articles on the site and also doing some social networking.

Question: Should we change the title tag to the suggested or are we taking a big risk in doing so? This is his main income - so anything we touch on the index page could lower it. Let me hear from you guys - what do you think?

btw - his site is http://accept-by-phone dot com

So lets think about a few things....

You base 100% of your business on a Google search. Obviously Google is unpredictable, so don't depend on them! The site could have EASILY been entirely taken off SERPs.

Second, if you didn't change your title tags, and neither did your competitors, what makes you think it's the title tag 100%???

A: How do you know it was that phrase?

B: How do you know it WAS because of a change in the "rankings" that you see?

AND

By all means get some links, but get links for the RIGHT reasons.

Maybe you lost ranking because your competitors are building better backlinks or there site is more relevant.

You should check the top sites for your keywords and analyze them. Do they have better websites with more useful info?

It's okay to change your title. It should include your keyword though.
Did you build any backlinks recently. Don't build low quality backlinks. It is much better to have few links that are coming from high PR websites.
Also don't build too many backlinks at the same time. Make it look more natural.

You can also add videos to your website and get traffic from youtube.

I had a look at your site and it looks good. Also i would move the sign up form for free ebook to the top of your website.
There is so much mis-information in the above post, it's difficult to know where to start.

If you want to gain your juice, try to find links in your niche. I was looking at the link (the command "link:" your website in Google) and I find no links related to your website...

I would suggest to change the title but do not put keywords in direct match. Try to be a little descriptive, it will help.

It's highly unlikely that changing the title alone will help. At the same time, it's quite a small thing, so, you could change it and see what that does.

Also, chrishirst is right about getting more backlinks. I'd look into yours and your competitors' backlink profiles and see what you could be missing in terms of backlinks.
