A buzz word these days seems to be Search Engine friendly urls.

What makes a url search engine friendly

And do search engines really look for them over non-freindly urls ?

It's about when and how people link things. If the anchor text of the URL is just the URL, it's going to have a lot of links with that keyword pointing to that url, thus is ranks higher for such given queries.

But there is no such thing are a search engine friendly URL.

It's about having keywords you want to target in the URL itself. For example, if you have an e-commerce site that sells used golf clubs, a good structure for your used golf club store might be:

golfclubcity/used-golf-clubs

Hyphens are better than underscores, because Google connects words separated with underscores, and interprets hyphens as spaces.

Bear in mind this is only one tiny aspect of good SEO strategy, and more weight is lent to content, quality links and social presence.

Example of dynamic URL -

http://example (DOT) com/ABCD/index.php?title=Page_title

Search Engine friendly URL -
http://example (DOT) com/ABCD/Page_title

You have to rewrite your Dynamic URL to convert in Search Engine friendly URL.

Ah well there are lots of useless "buzz" words in the search world.

Less than two querystring parameters.

Absolutely NOT.

The main difference is that SEs will treat URIs with querystring parameters as being "dynamic" and using a database, so they will reduce the crawl frequency to avoid overloading the server and database with rapid queries during a "high speed" crawl or a "deep" crawl.

A high speed crawl is where several SE user agents are on the URLs simultaneously and a deep crawl is where one or more SE useragents are attempting to fetch ALL the URLs on the one site in a short space of time.

requests are usually limited to allow 15 - 20 seconds of recovery (5 or 6 request per minute.

Static looking URIs are not given this recovery time and can be hit with requests every 5 or 10 seconds for SE useragents.

A search engine friendly URL is which can justify type of a web page. Lets have an example facebook.com/contactus/ this url can be called a Search Engine friendly URL. Moreover if a website url is containing some characters which is not a keyword then such kind of URLs would be little bit difficult to optimize.

Suppose your website's content is located at blog. Your website name is abc(dot)com. So abc(dot)com/blog is search engine friendly whereas abc(dot)com/?p=108 is not search engine friendly. Suppose, you have a name but I am calling you with numbers, so can you understand that I am calling you?

I also would like to add that keywords in domain names matter and, similarly, keywords used in URLs matter too. It's a very important factor for SEO

They're urls with words in them. Many scripts have them built in or have a mod that will generate search engine friendly urls. If you have a static website simply use words for your files. For example, instead of 123.html rename it to dog-facts.html if that's what the page is about.

Search engine are perfectly able to crawl and index URL with querystrings as well.

So called "search engine friendly" URLs are a complete misnomer.

The length of url (sub-url )should not be longer than 5 words as Google's search engine algorithm will simply ingore longer urls and you will not get a lot of credits from words that are after those "5".

No idea why you hid the URL.

That's not what he actually says, if you read it properly.

What he suggests is that as with all their word counting factors, Google apply a "law of diminishing returns" to URL words and apply them against what the "average" webmaster would do.

Every "expert" fails to miss the fact that Google has untold MILLIONS of examplar documents that have been created by people with no thought of search engines. You don't need a Phd in data analysis to create a sliding scale system of positive and negative factors or a Bayesian scoring system when you have plenty of "spam" and "ham" samples to play with.
