I've had a website for three years and the last two years I was number one in my niche. I would occasionally add pages to my website - but this site was near and dear to me - I was helping ppl with my site. People would write in and I would help them solve their problems. About four months ago, I noticed that their was a "abc dot net" that was traveling up the SERPs very quickly (mine had the same URL name except that it was a .com). I kept an eye on it - and then all of a sudden my site started to drop and this .net site (that had the same domain name (except for that it was .net)) eventually became number one and I dropped about 40 spots. The weird thing about this site is that it only has nine pages and no backlinks. Also filled heavily with google ads.

Why did my site for 60 pages drop and a nine page site came out of nowhere (I checked the site age - it's about three months old) - took the #1 position and mine was kicked down? I only added pages to my site and backlinked from hubpages AND from relevent forums - which I didn't do that often. It was really to get referral traffic. This has me stumped...

Nothing is guaranteed with search engines, and it probably means that some links that may have passing value now aren't.

and of course checking rankings is a pretty useless pastime because:

A: You only see what you see and nobody else sees the same.

B: You will search like a site owner checking rankings so whenever a new url appears for the same keywords YOU get to see it first and high in the rankings because that is what Google thinks you are interested in.

I think U did not do anything wrong.. and also did not do anything good to reach in the top position....I think u get the first position by luck and now lost ur luck and got the original position...u r not penalized bcz still u r in the SERP.. So better is do proper SEO and get your old position....

Your competitor may invest more and gain your position. When you are the number 1st of SERPs, it does'nt mean that you stop doing something.

So sorry to hear that. What happened to your site is quite surprising. Maybe that site (the one that all of a sudden crawled up) has a new technique or something. Hope you can recover.

Everything is subject for a change when it comes in SERPs. You need to adjust and go with the flow or update of the search engines esp Google.

Not always, links is not the only one ranking factor.

Losing first place is not an issue but you said you lost about 40 places, this mean that your site do have some links which big G don't like. 2nd your competitor working more powerfully then you.

@bigcat1967 - Which may be why you are seeing a site of the same domain at the top position. You did visit the .net domain, right? Maybe more than once, right? Counted their pages, right? Appeared "interested" in Google's eyes, right?
