No worries. I didn't mean to suggest you weren't reading what I said. You obviously take the time to think through your responses and I assumed you were first reading what I wrote. I have a thing about being accused of doing stuff I didn't do. If I did it then by all means I'll take the consequences, but when I think people are putting words in my mouth I want to make sure it's clear who's words they are.
I think in many ways what you describe is exactly what Google has done. You can look at how nofollow morphed from it's originally stated intention to what it became as another example.
Again I have no ethical objections to black hat methods for the most part. There are some practices that would push my ethical buttons. For example I tend to draw the line when it comes to doing something to hurt someone else's business. Do what you want to make your pages rank better, but don't do things to punish others as you do.
If and when I object to black hat methods it's because I don't think they fit the business model. Black hat is meant more as a short term solution. You either need to expect to lose the business and move on to the next or pull back from the black hat in time to not have that happen so you can transition to something with a light shade cap.

Yes. Sometimes I agree with spam comments. Black Hat SEO means the spread of... spam on this forum, hoping the search engines will see the sig-links in the post, and boost the PR of the target website.

Some places will give you far more than 150 links for free, just for being on their email list.

There are no "unlawful" methods! nobody is going to be arrested for "keyword stuffing"

Another poor citizen who thinks that innocence is a defence!
I know of completely innocent people who were arrested... and convicted too. (How do I know that they were innocent all the time? Because the appeal courts said so... eventually.)

A reversal on appeal only means that there was a procedural error....
Not necessarily a ruling concerning guilt......

Ahhh! We're under different legal systems, Jim. I only know a smattering of US law (largely from reading John Grisham!), but I think that US law embraces more procedural errors than does the UK. On the other hand, the UK allows more scope to appeal for a re-hearing of the facts, and more scope for appeals on matters of substantive law.

Nope! Most of the substance of US law still stems from the English Common Law, which can be traced back to 1198, which was the start of the reign of King Richard I ("Richard the Lionheart").

Black Hat search engine optimization is customarily defined as techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. Black Hat SEO breaks search engine rules and regulations. creates a poor user experience directly because of the SEO techniques utilized on the Web site. unethically presents content in a different visual or non-visual way to search engine spiders and search engine users.
