History: I've been running a small website for about a year. For the first 6 months, I engaged several freelancers to help with SEO -- link building, submit to directories, article submissions, a few paid press releases, etc... none of this had anything more than a modest impact, and for the last 6 months I've done no SEO work, and few updates or content adds have been made to the site.

For the last 2 months (almost exactly 1 year since my site launched) i've noticed an improvement in ranking and a 50% increase in traffic, and I have no idea why. I'm afraid to do anything in case I screw it up.

Is it that the site has 'aged' enough for google now? Could the SEO freelancers have submitted links that penalized me and those penalties have finally worn off? is it something else? Have the submitted links been around long enough now that they give me more juice?

Any thoughts on this are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Your site was good their sites were junk.....

The Penguin update may have knocked some competition out as well.

That's because none of that is SEO, just pretty inneffectual "marketing"

That because the continuous updates and changes actually mean that SE are ALWAYS having to reassess your pages.

As I've said before and probably will again, NO "SEO" at ALL is preferable to stupid SEO!!!

That happens always . simply building links wont get traffic . ity will take some months or even to get traffic from the links created . Now your site is enough aged for the search engines . you may now start again the marketing in low level . Please note : dont do over SEO

Wrong, building the RIGHT kind of links will get you traffic from day one. It's the useless "link building" of directories, "article" sites, and the tactics of forum link dropping, blog commenting and "social bookmarking" that won't.

I would probably remind one thing as it said in the most of the discussion boards, "the crawlable, subject related and interesting content is always king in search engines". Building links to your website is next. Ting!!

Google doesn't provide instant results. May be initially Google didn't count back links of your website, and it has given importance to your website's content, back links etc. This may be the reason you got good rankings and traffic

Nope. that's probably because the efforts on SEO that you paid for are already working, and yes, domain age is a probable cause of that improvement.

Its good if your site rank to do without any work but it is not a mannuarl ranking and offcourse it will be down when google rank update. so do some quality work for your site and get mannual ranking.

SEO is a long term process. and 6 months before u done SEO from free lancers and now u r doing little and also content updation , site changing etc...So its the reason u r getting improved....So better is continue what u r doing now and keep the position and traffic as it is.. slowly increase the SEO process

This is true. I get more traffic for my website from links than I do from search. And I still get a good chunk from search.

The best thing, is to create content that people actually like, because then bloggers will write about you. There's nothing better than free links from content based sites, you'll get traffic from them and increase your authority in the eyes of search engines.

Most of my traffic is for my free plugins, and one tutorial. It isn't worth much, though it makes enough from advertising to pay for my hosting. But it still tells you something about how these things work.

You should be happy about it. It's good for you. Don't worry. I have heard that post penguin brought some fortunes for some webmaster. May be you are one of them.
