There are various methods which contain lesser risks and are ok to use for search engine optimization. White hat techniques are the ones which are completely ethical and abide to the rules set by the search engines. They adhere to the prescribed set of laws and rules to reap profits by increasing the web presence.

Black hat is simply manipulating the search engine results pages using a number of methods including:
- hidden text and hidden links;
- cloaking - described above as showing one page version to engines and another version to real users;

White hat SEO simply means the tactics or techniques that are following the rules and regulation of the search engines. Following the rules would hurt you, but instead it will help you in gaining organic backlinks for your site.
