and of course this IS an article that is meant to be read, rather than simply posted for some dubious "SEO benefit".

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds
Thought for today:- Is SEO the only industry where all the cowboys are Indians?
^You should send this article out in a email to all members, why people think getting traffic is more important than good content is beyond me, those visitors wont be going back.

I don't know if I would call either traffic or good content the end goal. It's more what you do with the traffic that arrives at your good content that matters.

Sometimes people say that creating a site network is very good for SEO. Linking out from your own sites would cause more harm than good.I think it also depends about the sites ip and hosting.
The idea would definitely be true, but there's a bigger picture with building the links. Isn't it that Google like to see links coming from different sources? True enough that internal linking can boost your rankings but aren't all those links coming from a single root domain? Another source of quality links other than just making those "manufactured links" is to build relationships with fellow webmasters. The best link could also be from the content of a relevant and trusted site, and those links really look natural in the eyes of the search engines.
The point is, too many people spend time chasing after links that they have no control over, links that are of negligible and sometimes dubious value. The bigger picture is the time value of money. Building a bigger site is more valuable, efficient, and cost-effective than any other SEO method out there. If you have good content and are able to convert your visitors, adding new pages has multiple benefits not related to SEO as well.

Why would a user follow a link to an author's site if the article they are reading is horrible in the first place?
What kind of massive spamming operation is that?

I wonder how some of the webmasters rush to have backlinks, but nor for making content.
It's true that all of relevant links is a link that are useful and all of the irrelevant links are like spam. Thanks for remembering me this once again.
Thanks.
