A blog is just a web site so your question is "Does a web site help seo?".

Good old Braindeadware...at it again. You guys didn't get it a few months ago when you spammed me, and you don't now.
Like gringo quite rightly pointed out, a blog is the same as any other site. There is no inherent SEO advantage to a blog in and of itself, and quite often there are aspects of a blog that are very search-engine-unfriendly.
You can't just throw something up somewhere half-assed and expect it to rank. It hasn't worked that way in about the past 5-7 years.

The only use of a blog in SEO would be as a space on your site to add unique quality content that other sites would link to of their own accord. As a blog is simply an extension of a site, or a site on its own, it is not some sort of secret weapon of SEO - it's just a (hopefully) regularly updated area of the site where you can make posts

So, typically, a blog is a web site running WordPress, or Google's Blogger. These are server side applications. They emit html to the client, be it FireFox, Safari, a screen reader, or GoogleBot. Not only doesn't Google care the difference between a blog, a forum, and a site built in FrontPage using purely static html ... it doesn't typically even know the difference.
Which means a blog can be used to good effect in SEO, but that's not guaranteed by virtue of being a blog.

My blog is already starting to rank, and it's got a whopping four posts. The most recent of them took me three days to write. It's a better comparative review than you'll find in Consumer Reports. I run a photography site, and the real benefit I'm seeing from the blog is that it helps me separate and organize. I have articles on my site, but I've set the bar pretty high, or at least tried to ... with a blog, I can put out shorter articles. And I can post my latest and greatest photo on the blog with a link back to where it lives on the main site, tell a different story, and people who subscribe to my rss feed may come back and visit my main site.
Notice that the key here isn't having a blog; it's careful planning and hard work. But if you put those in, then yes, a blog can help you.

Forrest, you nailed the issue sqwa. You're doing something unique and original with your blog...it's not just recycled crap or regurgitated content. It's something unusual, and pretty cool.
This differs from buddy's idea up above (of course, he's involved with a spammer so no surprises there.)

Very nice post from sheena, who's rep just went back from red to green. I was going to contribute to that trend, but have given out too much TP in the last 24 hours - I'll have to come back later.

Ahhhh. Good timing!
Sheena, it's all well and good to copy a little snippet of wisdom to help answer somebody's question, but you need to give the dude credit. It's just fair, and how things are done.

IMO... Blogs can help in a way that it can increase your IBLs, (of course, you'll be placing your site's links in it) you can post articles and press release about your site. It can also bring topic
but all these depends on how you run your blog

Yes but no-one's going to visit a site full of links to the same site and lots of self-promotion. If the blog has plenty of quality unique content and a couple of links or press releases, then a blog can help to bring in some quality traffic

I've never done a press release; my site isn't newsworthy.
But something that VanGogh pointed out while convincing me to start a blog is that your content will get scraped and show up on other sites. RSS makes this easy and inevitable. If you put fully qualified links, as opposed to relative ones, into content that gets stolen and republished, you'll at least get some links out of it. Not very high quality ones, but still...
Also, while the engines don't take how often you change the site in the serps, having a blog can help you divide up your site logically, and give you a less formal venue for sharing tips and whatnot. On that note, this is an "organic" link from a site I've never heard of before, which I discovere | |
