Hey guys Matthew Bagley here from Paramiliar Design Studios.

I'm looking for some advice. Now over at Paramiliar I have developed a Site Popularity report which basicly is a report telling you how well your site is doing in popularity (of course we cant measure visitors or anything like that but it is fairly accurate!)

Now there has been talk of expanding it but there are two ideas.

1) Automate the system and allow visitors to signup to receive free weekly reports on both their website and upto 9 competitors

2) Generate the report for every page on the website thus allowing individual pages to be monitored.

Now we would love to do both but ideally we want to know what would be more usefull to website owners.

So if you could post some comments and feedback here it would be very much appreciated.

Personally, I'd go for the first option. There are plenty of traffic monitoring methods out there - cookies, software etc. but I'd love to have a report on my competition!

Yeah, I agree. I can use awstats and Analytics to see info on all my pages.

How do you identify this info? And do you "pick" competitors, say by querying Google for "related" sites, or do you let people enter them?

Well the competitors are defined by the person visiting the site, there isn't much point in the script picking it as I know full well it would get it horibly wrong lol but the purpose of the per page one is to show each pages google PR and backlinks to that specific page.

The purpose of the script isn't to monitor traffic its to monitor popularity so lets say you are doing a link exchange system, well as you can see the system shows you the number of backlinks to your frontpage in each of the search engines so you can see how well the exchange is going.

On a seperate note I have been advised to add a history graph so that you can track your progress and also showing the visitor the backlinks that are on the various search engines and perhaps a viral marketing system but unsure on that one just yet

So, nothing particularly useful then.

Oh well I dunno,

could it be that counting backlinks and chasing toolbar PR are the most useless, pointless things that any "webmaster" could be wasting their time on.

As I said
"pointless things that any "webmaster" could be wasting their time on."

What use is knowing how many links the extemely broken Google link: operator says
I can go to Google's "home" page and get the same useless information.

All these "tools" do is perpetuate the idea that the value on the silly green bar is important and gathering more and more useless links is somehow productive.

Neither could be further from the truth!

So you are stating that getting links into your website is worthless?

Just link exchanges, forum posting for links & the so called "viral" marketing

Well i think this topic has gone off topic a little, the purpose of the script is to help monitor marketing attempts nothing more or less some webmaster will find it usefull others wont thats personal choice.
