I randomly looked on an old domain I had http://www.poomdesign.com/ and it seems as though somebody has purchased this to whack loads of links onto.

I think I had this domain for around 4 years so was quite an old domain so may have been well known.

I am new to all of this SEO stuff so has somebody bought this because it was a known domain so may work well?

The Google PR still appears to be 0 so it can't be doing that well.

Overall, is it worth using spare domain names (I have a few) to basically have a set of links on to point to random sites or install a link directory script on?

In a word...no. This is nothing more than made-for-advertising content scraping (likely taken from search engines), and provides nothing useful to anyone.

The only lesson here is to hang on to your domain names, because you never know what idiot will decide he/she wants them to pull some half-assed stunt off with them.

Ahhh, not sure why anybody would want to buy that domain then as it was personal as it was my nick name and design after?

It looks like they purchased the domain and are earning from any left over traffic that is coming to the site. Guys make a lot of money buying up old domains that people let go.

I registered my name as a domain and forgot about it, a year later there was a link farm type of advertising on it

The thing is, people just don't care. If there are links pointing at it, and it's available, someone is waiting to jack you for it and hoping they can make some money.
