A popular blog I read has a recurring column about search query info. I don't know just how much stock to put into the writing, because it's written by the biggest idiot on the internet (and the #1 biggest, not just a contender!), but it's still an interesting question.

I've only ever come up for this once, and it was by accident - I didn't optimize for this phrase, and don't even use all the words. Not sure how it happened. But what a great thing to rank for!
web sight for all crip knowledge

Sorry about the font; I pasted that in from Google Analytics.

You will find that some times. I have seen my Blog rank for unbelievable keywords that I have never used on my site, like "gamehours".

It is very easy to rank for non-competitive terms that nobody has ever optimized for.
Often it is enough if you have exactly that phrase somewhere on your page.

What many people don't realize is that this type of traffic is not worthless.
According to Google 50% of all searches performed are unique!
This means that a search term has never been used before.
So lots of your traffic will come from terms that you could never have guessed - or even optmized for.

That's one reason why the cheesy phrase "content is king" is really true in terms of traffic. Mathematically, the more content you have the higher the probability to be found for one of those 50% all-time-unique search terms.
And 50% of all the traffic in the world is a lot!

If I'd have known that you were such a world renowned expert, (a.k.a. number six on the planet), I would have asked about 'the rosy lipped bat fish' long ago...

As much as "biggest idiot on the internet" is a phrase we should all try to rank for (and the disturbing thing is it came from someone finding me), that's not the best phrase.

This one is:

Where did the Cleavers live on Leave It To Beaver? (you answered wrong)

I never even got the chance to answer the question before I got told I was wrong!

Did you really get found on that phrase? Man...that's the best sample phrase yet! Seriously - it indicates the importance of having volumes of good info on your site.

I'm not suggesting Adam ever named anyone the "biggest idiot on the internet"...no way...just couldn't happen.

A while back I kept getting found for "flying underpants" because of a thread I posted at IHY back in 2003:

I was in the top half of the first page for saddam execution video on the day after his execution. Sinse then iv'e not had any search phrase that stands out and creates a load of traffic like that one did. Most of my google visits come from long tail searches these days.

I just have to wait for another tyrant to be executed i guess

Yessir, I did. That's why I created a post about the topic; it was just too damned funny.
