Getting other websites to link to your website can be a difficult task. But, as we all know, linking is one of the top methods by search engines to rank a website.
Link bait hooks
A link bait hook is any method or appliance used to gain the interest of visiting webmasters link back to your website. A hook can take many forms. The important thing is that an effective hook must produce a call to action on the part of the visitor. They should be motivated by it to link back to your website.

Well, Link bait is all about good content which is controversial at the same time. Something which others "want to link to" not "need to link to". For example, "Rumor: Google To Buy Feedburner" is something I saw yesterday.

It doesn't have to be controversial. It just has to good enough to attract the kind of people who will spread it to others.

Controversy is one of the better ways to create link bait, but it's not necessary. Sometimes link bait just comes from pure stupidity (for a classic example, see my latest blog post...that guy nailed link bait.)
