I've a blog called Webmaster-Dome which I've been maintaining for quite some time. Recently, I contacted my friend Thilak of Tech-Buzz (he gets 9000 visitors a week) and he told me that one of the big problems in my Wordpress site is the permalink structure which is :
I've 3/10 in SEOMoz's page strength tool and a lot of incoming links close to 180 or something. I was thinking about changing the permalink structure to something more search engine friendly like :
Is it a wise move or should I stay this way ?

Having dynamic or static looking URLs makes no difference at all to how your blog is indexed or ranked.

If you were to ask me when you started your blog i would have said go with webmaster-dome.com/<post_title>, It's sometimes marginally better for your users. But as far as ranking in search engines, It makes no difference.

Stox has shown himself to be very intelligent time and again, and more to the point, he knows what he's talking about. But I have to disagree with him in this instance. While I don't give much weight to "page strength" I do think the search engines, particularly Google, prefer pages that have the keyword in the URL. If all things were equal, which in your case with future posts they would be, when somebody searches for something that's part of the title of your post, having that phrase in the URL and the title tag is better than only having it in the title tag. Also, when people link to one of your posts to talk about it, but just make the URL the anchor text, having the keyword you want in the URL will have the added benefit of putting that phrase in the anchor text. All of the major forums let users create links with whatever text they'd like, but some of the hand-written ones, including some large scale forums, only allow for the URL as anchor text.

Can you redirect the old style of URL to the new style? If you have any control over the code that should be pretty easy. It will take the engines some time to sort things out, but eventually your PR will carry over from your existing posts. But the new ones will benefit immediately.

But, John, I referred some good websites and asked some experts over phone. All of them say it is unhealthy to redirect page. They tell me that I should sort out some other way .

I'm confused !!!!!

I'd say use 301
301 - Permanent Redirect
It would be used the way its supposed to.

So, wouldn't I lose all the backlinks that I've earned ? Is there anyway to get them back. If not, oh well !! I'll work on it again. Anyway, how can I do a 301 redirect in Wordpress ?

same way you would redirect on any site

Apache: use .htaccess

IIS: use server side code.

You'll loose them temporarily, for anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months. Eventually, when Google goes back to recrawl them looking for changes, it'll find the 301 redirects and update things.
