I submitted my site to DMOZ months ago ... I don't know if they ever listed me or not. On the bright side, it turns out it isn't really necessary to get a listing with them to do alright on the web.

The fact that you asked the question is where you went wrong. You've made the mistakes so many others have made before you, and so many others will make after you.

1) You assumed that you were entitled to a Dumbass listing. It's their site and they can do what they want with it...and no one demonstrates that more than they do.

2) You assumed that a Dumbass listing is a magic SEO bullet (as most people do). A well-built site can get to the first page for almost any keywords and phrases without needing Dumbass at all.

Submit your site (if you want to waste your time) and forget about it. They'll get to it if and when they get to it.

Well, as far as I know, Dmoz has been down or atleast less-hyped in the media compared to what it was months ago. And, don't worry, I remember applying for it about 6 months ago. Still no reply !! Corrupt editors and lack of leadership is really plaguing it.

I think they just don't have enough people working there, and such a huge backlog of sites waiting to be approved. People can volunteer there, but I just don't think it's important enough for me to.

Does anybody use DMOZ to find sites? Or only to submit there? I think 90 % of the traffic to any directory is people submitting sites to the proper category. Meaning they aren't very important, don't send you any traffic.

The only POSSIBLE advantage to getting your site listed in DMOZ is tail end traffic (i.e. small engines). A significant number of small engines suck data out of DMOZ and if your site happens to be in a category they fish, you may get some incidental traffic. As regards SERPs in the real search engines... DMOZ is a waste of time.
