The trick is to realise there is no trick. If you create something worth visiting people will visit it, Then they will tell their friends about it and then they will link to it.
Stop looking for tricks, start working on content people want to see.
As stated above you should use keywords about the current page and write good content... also get links from other sites that are related to your own site.
Also intergrate keywords in the heading for the page and don't use images for headings.
'Content is king'... if your site has great content traffic will come but not straight away... like any new site.
Social bookmarking and blog can improved traffic for the site. Forum posting with your keyword signature and classified ads such as craigslist and gumtree
Although I believe that content is important, you still need to do promotion. It's one of the most important thing to do, the actual "sell".
Even if you promote - when the traffic lands on your site and sees zero quality content they won't be coming back - or linking. Waste of money to promote before the site has the ingredients your market is looking for.
