For starters, this is the wrong forum. This is the Web Hosting forum. You want the SEO Talk forum.

For seconds, submitting to search engines is a complete waste of time. They look for links from pages already in their index so that they can find new sites.

If you want to get indexed quickly, the easiest thing you can do is to put a hyperlink to your site either in your forum signature (best option) or this thread.

Try if you can to use this vBcode (except replace the <> with square brackets []).

<url=http://www.yoursitehere.com>Anchor Text used to describe your site here</url>

What I have known till now is that forum sig’s are only for human users to click and visit as they are not crawled by the SE’s at all. Only live-links provided in the posts above the signature space are helpful as they are crawled by the bots. Signatures in the forums won’t help in getting the site indexed.

Let's take a look at your signature, Claud. (It's the most convenient example...nothing judgemental or anything like that. It's just the one I got to first).
Code:
            <!-- sig -->
                <div>
                    __________________<br />
                    <font color="Black"><a href="http://www.eukhost.com/dedicated.php" target="_blank">Windows Dedicated Servers</a> || <a href="http://www.eukhost.com/semi-dedicated.php" target="_blank">Semi Dedicated Hosting</a></font><br />
<font color="DarkSlateBlue"><a href="<A href="mailto:support@eUKhost.com"><b>Must">mailto:support@eUKhost.com"><b>Must Check:</b></a></font><font color="DarkSlateBlue"><a href="http://blog.eukhost.com/2007/01/21/c...ternet-access/" target="_blank"> Cheap Internet Access</a></font>
                </div>
            <!-- / sig -->
There's no nofollow attribute on the links.
The page itself doesn't have a nofollow attribute (either by meta tag or by robots.txt).
So there's nothing to stop it from being crawled and indexed via SEs.

Adam you have given a very good example but don’t you think that people would start posting any **** thing in their posts (which would not be good) to get maximum benefits from their signatures assuming that the SE’s crawl the sig links and that would also help in getting their new sites get indexed.

Actually I read a thread at SP where one of the TL’s had clearly mentioned that the forum sig’s are NOT crawled by the SE’s but only the live-links. I guess that happens in some forums if I’m not wrong.

That's absolutely what I think, Claud. Not only do I think it, I see it.

But one of three things always seems to happen:

1) The poster ends up finding that their forum posts aren't the magic bullet to instant search engine ranking gratification and gives up after awhile.

2) The poster ends up posting such useless and annoying things that no one listens to them (so they don't get any user traffic) and give up after awhile for that reason.

3) The poster ends up getting banned for either posting useless things or inflammatory ones.

As a result, that type of noise tends to be minimal.

What you may be referring to is the policy that some boards have of disabling signatures outright. In other words, if you have a signature, it won't be included in a post or reply. WMT doesn't do that, but if I'm not mistaken SitePoint (I'm assuming that's your SP) does. I just don't use SitePoint because I don't use any site with popup windows that don't appear as the result of a user action.

unlisted80 I think you're thinking of directories. Submitting to a search engine wouldn't get you any links.

Adam is right. Submitting to search engines is one of the most pointless things you can do. It's not so much that it hurts you in any way (though I've seen some argue it does), but it simply doesn't do anything.

Claud people absolutely do try to increase post counts thinking the sig links help them. Have a look around this forum and I'd bet the majority of single line posts were written for that very reason.

One thing to clear up is that links in forum sigs do get crawled and so can help your site get indexed. But they probably carry little weight in helping your pages rank better. So all the people who post for the backlinks are wasting their time when it comes to improved ranking, but if you need to get a site indexed and don't know any place to get a link then adding one to your sig and posting will get your site crawled.

When I was took a webdesgin class...the first things my professor taught me is how to submit your site to the search engine. Yeah maybe there is pointless however its get your site index and they can crawling to your site.

I am not say that you should submit to every search engine (or paid to submit) i am say that you should submit all the major one it will help your site.

Honestly how many of you submit your site to a search engine? i bet about 99.99% do

my 1 cent post

Thanks

I was taught the same thing. Both of our professors were wrong. Submitting your site to search engines does not get them to index your site. Submitting puts your site in a queue that may or may not ever be looked at again. For all practical purposes submitting a site to a search engine is pointless. If you add a link to your site in your forum signature you'll get crawled a lot faster. Keep in mind that some who designs websites doesn't necessarily have a clue when it comes to search engines. Many understand both, many more don't. Also keep in mind that not everything you learn in a classroom is true. Professors are human beings who make mistakes and sometimes teach classes though they aren't experts in the topic. There are many things I was taught in school that were flat out wrong.

Search engines find, crawl, and index your site by finding links pointing to it on other sites. The more links and the more often those other sites are crawled the quicker your site will be crawled and indexed.

The first site I ever built I did submit to the major search engines, because at that time I though it was what you were supposed to do. I've never done it again and my sites have generally started to get indexed within a week at most and more often within a couple of days.

99.99% of SEOs who understand seo are not submitting their site to search engines. It would be more like 0%. I'm sure many people do submit in the mistaken belief that it does something, but those people simply don't understand how search engines work.

One should also keep in mind that a web design professor doesn't necessarily know a thing about web design, either.

I can't count the number of "educated professionals" that come out of some web design school or class and think they've got the world figured out because their student copy of Dr*amw*av*r or FrontPage allows them to build really cool web pages. Why do they think that? They were taught that.

Same logic applies to anything to do with search engines. I actually heard a guy with a doctorate (don't know what he had his doctorate for) say "the only search engine that matters is Yellow Pages."

Formal education and web design are two mutually exclusive items.

Sad but true. And when you look at the world of search engines things change a lot more frequently than course curriculums change. In fact often what might have been true about search engines when a course started won't be true by the time it's done.

Educational institutions and seo move at very different paces.

My answer would be misleading, but I'd say "not me."

Back when search engine submission was the only way to get indexed (way WAY back in the day), I did. But have I done it in the last 7 years? No.

So ask that question: who has submitted to search engines in the new millenium?
