Whats the best way to learn SEO?

I will come to a point fairly soon where I will have to start learning about SEO. Where would be the best place to do this?

There's a good thread for beginners on Highrankings. Once you've read that, you'll find the forum is a good source of information.

Use seo tutorials, you may find lots of them in the net, then forums are great resources, you may want to find some other active seo forums.

1) Read, but be prepared to discount 99.9% of information as false, incorrect, or misleading. SEO is full of liars and people who don't know any better.

2) Never accept any SEO theory that interferes with the user experience. There's no point in drawing traffic to a site if the user experience has been compromised.

3) Ask on here. Some of the people on here can drop mad SEO knowledge on a young brutha (vangogh, chrishirst, Learning Not-So-Newbie, ForrestCroce, Chroder, st0x, etc.)

4) Remember that link building is NOT the universal SEO solvent, contrary to popular opinion these days. A well-built site will never require as much effort to promote, so worry about your site first.

5) www.mattcutts.com/blog <--- lots of good SEO basic stuff here, and it comes from a guy who might have a little bit of inside information thanks to his employer.

Beginner's Guide to Search Engine Optimization is a great free guide to cover the basics and point you in th right direction.

SEO forums and blogs are a great place to learn. You're always welcome to ask questions here too.

When it comes to sorting out the misinformation if you see past the idea of seo being about trying to manipulate an algorithm or it being about quick fixes you'll learn a lot faster.

SEO is really a lot more like traditional offline marketing than most people want to see. There's certainly more of an emphasis on search engines, but many of the principles are the same.

go to different web site that has been on the top rank of different SEs and make study for that. the question will be "how they do that"? cheers

I learned a lot from actually doing and experimenting!
I mean learning in forums is good, but nothing beats the actual thing.

I think SEO is like linguistics - it never ends. SEO a year ago was quite different in many aspects than it is now... much depends on what you focus at - any traffic, quality traffic, high PR, etc.
I think starting with blog will give valuable insight into where traffic comes from, general web stats, keyword density, meaning of good content, inbound one-way links to articles, and many things that make SEO life an enjoyable pattern to follow :-)

Gota say, iv been looking at some of van goths recent posts about SEO and there pretty decent, if there was any one i'd ask on here it would be him... Allthough Im 6th for a keyword with 128million competitors and brings me 50% off my traffic so.. I dont really need to ask any one for SEO. Mattcuts.com/blog is the best blog to read as the guy accually works for google and wont crap you on no SEO methods that dont work,
