I noticed many pages on my site appearing on strange search terms on mainly google, I had 50 different pages, all ranking in the top 3 (results) for odd keywords. I only noticed it by looking at the statistics of my visitors, seeing what search terms gave me traffic.
Now, these pages are all gone from the top(pages) on google, on many terms I can't even find the pages.
I figure this is due to google somehow "figuring out" what the pages really are about, thus ranking them higher on those terms, and lower on the odd, odd terms I saw.
I believe lack of deeplinks will make it much harder for google (and other bots) to understand what your subpages are about, as your internal linking will be the ONLY links with anchor text describing a particular page. Once you get more and more links(deep or to index), google will have more and more information to determining what your site and/or pages are about.
This is even more true if the majority of the links are non-relevant, making the surrounding text on the page(linking to your site) confuse the spiders even more.
More relevant inbound links and, more important, the inbound linking will make a huge difference on SE placement.
