I wouldn't recommend it myself, I would email Matt cuts. He generally will reply about it and see what he has to say. Most of the time he has the down low.

A competitor can do things to lower your ranking, but it's not easy and you have to practice some poor seo or no seo for it to happen. If you approach seo seeing it more in terms of general marketing instead of looking for quick fixes to rank better you make it harder for someone else to target and hurt your site.

Most pages that fall in ranking like the guy's you linked to do so because search algorithms change. Ranking is not guaranteed for anyone. Just because you rank #1 today is not indication that you will rank anywhere in the top 100 tomorrow.

I noticed many pages on my site appearing on strange search terms on mainly google, I had 50 different pages, all ranking in the top 3 (results) for odd keywords. I only noticed it by looking at the statistics of my visitors, seeing what search terms gave me traffic.

Now, these pages are all gone from the top(pages) on google, on many terms I can't even find the pages.

I figure this is due to google somehow "figuring out" what the pages really are about, thus ranking them higher on those terms, and lower on the odd, odd terms I saw.

I believe lack of deeplinks will make it much harder for google (and other bots) to understand what your subpages are about, as your internal linking will be the ONLY links with anchor text describing a particular page. Once you get more and more links(deep or to index), google will have more and more information to determining what your site and/or pages are about.

This is even more true if the majority of the links are non-relevant, making the surrounding text on the page(linking to your site) confuse the spiders even more.

More relevant inbound links and, more important, the inbound linking will make a huge difference on SE placement.

Theo, was the site new when it was ranking for the odd keywords. I think it's not uncommon for new sites to rank well briefly for uncompetitive keywords and then fall off in the rankings. I'm not sure why and perhaps it is somewhat like you suggest. I thought maybe it was a predisposition to present new pages for a few days to measure click through on the links and time spent on the site.
