I just think when you use tools like these you lose focus on the things that will really help and spend too much time focused on things that don't carry much weight.

I don't think a tool like this can tell you with what % a search engine will see your page copy as relevant to the page title. How would it possibly know the amount of times a search engine needs to see a word in order for it to be considered relevant to something else on the page?

All I know is that once I did this I jumped up 3 -4 pages in one indexing by Google. So I know it works, maybe not as much as something else but why not make sure anyways since its very little work to correct?

This kind of thinking all too common in the SEO world. I did A and B happened; therefore A caused B. NO!

Given that nobody can even identify all the factors that influence ranking, let alone isolate them in any form of testing, you can't validly say that using that tool helped your rankings.

Did all the other factors that you can't control stay the same (e.g. the search engines, your competition, the age of your pages etc)?

That's a gross assumption. There is no way that you can know when the engineers at Google change the way that their algorithm works. Not every change is published and not every change causes huge repercussions.

As I said, the search engines, your competition and the age of your pages are only some examples of things that can affect your rankings which you can't control. You may only have changed one thing but there could have been a multitude of other things that changed too.

Shannon first gringo is right about all the other things that could have changed in that week. In fact I wouldn't think that a week is really a sufficient time see the effects of any changes you made. What you did very well might have been what caused the jump, but there are almost always other factors that could be responsible for the change.

I'm not trying to discount that the tool helped you write better page titles, but there's generally a lot more going on. Do you mind if I ask what the search terms were where you saw an increase.

What I'm saying about accepting the advice for a tool is it ultimately leads to the wrong approach in optimizing a page and site. I think it's too easy to become completely reliant on a piece of software. Keep in mind that search engines do make changes to their algorithms all the time. They may not all be big changes, but changes are often happening. Software that helps today can cause harm tomorrow.

I think it's ok to use software to learn about your site, but if you always follow the advice of a tool you will always be limited by what that tool does or doesn't know about seo.

Oh and give Matt the link. He's asked a few times already.

You want your website to have different titles so that different keywords are able to be used in directorys and forums.
