chrishirst speaks the truth. The Alexa toolbar is useless.
I had a client who was cold-called by a company asking him to buy ad space, using the Alexa toolbar as the indicator. The argument was funny as hell too..."my site ranks 150,000 and yours is 600,000, so mine is four times as popular as yours." (Keep in mind that my client's site is in a niche market with a small target base.)
Then the advertiser claimed he got millions of page views per month. I pulled out a site I own that now ranks in the top 200,000 (but at the time was in the top 90,000), showed my client that in the toolbar, then showed him my stats for the site (which, as popular as the site was and still is, didn't reflect millions of page views per month or anything like that).
My client doesn't ask anymore.
