Getting 5000 backlinks is itself a greedy attitude. But, I cant say it isnt possible. It is possible if u work for it. But, the way u approach the problem is pretty dangerous. Because, using bots can invite banishment from google. Google hates anything that has the word "bot" in it. They consider it as a black hat method.
U see, there's also something else u shud know. 5000 backlinks from low pagerank is equal to 10 backlinks from high pagerank. Pagerank doesnt fully depend on the no.of links, but the quality and relevancy of the links. You shud not promote your site for being in google. When u put an AD or link, think how the people will be benifitted. Think this way and u'll be safe in th eyes of google.
Do legitimate promotion. Bots are always bad news if u target google and Yahoo!. I can give u an example. Link Vault is very popular and well thought up auto link exchange system. It is an ingenious link system which works according to the "Vaultage" of different users. It obeyed every bit of google TOS. And, no one ever thought it would be banned from google. Though it wasnt an official ban, it actually disappeared from google's database. So, take my advice and never go for illegal and "Get 10000+ links TODAY" sites.
Sometimes, these sites may deposit your links to some link farm(known as bad neighborhoods). No link exchange in the web is fast. Web Promotion is slow but effective. Or else, u have to put in a lot of effort and money into it .Even if it is a little time consuming, be legal, sincere and u'll surely get a good ranking once and a good feeling in your mind.
Did you like the post ? I worked half an hour searching about it. If u like it or agree to it, pls give me talkupation.

I made a blog post on How to get backlinks
The main ways are
1. Submit to directories.
2. Link exchange with related sites.
3. link bait by posting content that is link worthy
4. Encourage people to syndicate your content though RSS feeds
5. Buy them

if you are trying to get backlinks without paying a lot, there are a few methods which can help you get a PR4 or so..
1. Try submitting to all the free directories here:
Web Directories
*It would be smart to create an extra E-Mail Account which you would give with your submission and try to stick to 3 pages a day max!
2. Signature links are extremely popular and you never know when a thread becomes PR3/PR4 (that doesn't mean you should spam!):
V7N
DigitalPoint
SitePoint
Webmaster-Talk
NamePros
those are a few good big forums (I like V7N the most)
3. If your website is unique, get the word out and you might get a good amount of natural links (blog posts)
4. If you're site is completely new, use Link Vault and get a max of 3 links a day (go to organize links)..
5. If you have a really nice google indexed site, put co-op on it:
Free Co-op Advertising Network
But be careful with how you collect links, GotLinks and LinkExchanges are bad places and be careful with how many links you're making in
a small amount of time, you don't want to raise any flags.

What I suggest is instead of going after 5000 links try to get little less but quality links and you will get best result. Its good to have many links but should be quality if you get links from a link farm many of them or if you buy links from a farm in bulk it will do no good.
Best Regards
Ashoke.

link market is also a good way to have search engines lose trust in your site. Chances are the links you get through them won't count for much and could potentially cause more harm than good.

You could also take the Seth Godin approach and "create something remarkable." People will link to you. Might take a little longer than a week though

Yeah that's one of the keys with backlinks and seo. Patience is important. You're generally not going to get the quality links it takes to build trust in your site overnight or even in a week or two. It usually takes more time to get those quality links. Also with Google if you build links too fast they'll probably consider it unnatural and flag your site and discount many if not all of the links.

I do not agree with people who says that the only determiner of PR is backlinks. I have 2 Turkish websites and they do not have much backlinks (one has 31 links and the other one has 28) but their page ranks are both 4. I coded them both with xhtml and css. Articles were good quality and the results are satisfactory I think. When I add some content, Google is indexing rapidly for example. And sites are very successful in their categories and keywords.
So I think that -with backlinks- coding and content is very important for your page rank too.

If you mean where your page ranks in the results to a given query then yes it's more than just backlinks, though backlinks are still going to be very important.
If you mean page rank in PR as developed by Google and seen by us as that little green bar, then it's only about backlinks to the page. It's more than just the quantity of links though. You mention having 31 and 28 links pointing to a page. If a few of those pages are PR 5 it's probably enough to give the page a PR4.
It will also depend on how you determined the number of backlinks. If you found the information at Google you should know they never show all the links they know abiout, just a small random sample. If Google shows a page has 31 backlinks it most likely has many more.
There are a few things that weight the formula when calculating PR, but it has nothing to do with content or code or anything other than links pointing to a page and where those links came from.

In fact I mean the first one. Because Google's page rank's formula is given as you know. And it depends on -quality and number of- backlinks only.
Founders of Google wanted to evaluate the sites with a wisely method. They said that a better site can get more backlinks. But this hypothesis is not true in real life I think. First of all, in the liberated market, people do not elevate "good" sites. When I say "good" I mean merit goods like education especially. For example free education sites...
If I come back to the subject; when you exchange link, you are doing something which Google does not want you to do in fact. Google wants only complimentary links. If we exchange or buy links, we can say that we are <edited>not<edited> satisfying Google.

Yep that makes sense and is what I thought you meant, but just wanted to make sure.
It's actually ok to exchange links, but you're right in that they're not the preferred way to get backlinks. Recirpocal links should always be kept tp a minimum. I've seen 5% of your overall backlinks as a guide. And those recips should be relevant to your site.
Of course sometimes those link exchanges are done for the traffic the link directly sends too without concern for how a search engine will view it.
Still I agree that exchanging links isn't the idea way to go about getting backlinks. Building good content that people want to link to is the best way.
