Google Sandbox is very similar to a new website being placed on probation, and kept lower than expected in searches, prior to being given full value for its incoming links and content.

The result is that a site does not receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword phrases. Even with good content, abundant incoming links and strong Google PageRank, a site is still adversely affected by the Sandbox effect. The Sandbox acts as a probation for sites, possibly to discourage spam sites from rising quickly, getting banned, and repeating the process.

There's a lot of disagreement about what the 'Google Sanbox' really is. I think of it more as a sanbox effect. I don't belive Google places your site in a 'sandbox' or does anything to hold you back.

Recent updates to the Google ranking algorithm place weight on age related things. They give more weight to the age of a site and the age of links to a site and the age of the site that links to a site, etc. Because of the weight of age it can be difficult for new sites to rank for certain keywords at first. Not impossible though. In general sites that have been online longer will have had more time to build backlinks to their site where newer sites won't and have a more difficult time ranking.

Often when people talking about the 'sandbox' they imply that it's impossible to rank well for anything because Google has placed them in the 'sandbox' Pages can rank for less competitive keywords soon after Google indexes the page. It will take longer to show up in search results for more competitive keywords.

Many people have seen time and again that for many keyords they can't get their pages to rank for the first 9-12 months that the site is online. It's hard to know though whether it's because of something specific Google does or if given the current algorithm it just takes about that long to build the necessary links to compete.

Whatever the reason there does seem to be an aging factor when it comes to getting ranked at Google.

when it only appears for low competition searches and exact phrases from a page title, but of course that could also mean your optimisation is crap

sck4784, that was part of my point above. There really isn't this thing that your site is placed in called a 'sandbox' that has some kind of border where you can tell if you're in or out. My thought is that it's just something that means it will take time before a site can show up for certain keywords. That's why I think of it more as an effect.

Chris is right as well in that it could also just be a web page hasn't be optimized properly of enough to show up in the results for certain searches. In fact I think more often than not when people refer to a sandbox it's just a way of providing an excuse as to why their web pages aren't being found in search results. Much easier to say it's Google's fault than to rethink and redo your optimization.

I'm sure there are those whould disagree, but I don't think there's demarcation point where you're in or out of the 'sandbox'

I read thia today and decided to do a google search for my site, www.17minutes.co.uk, using "17minutes street photography" as the search term. it came up straight away as the first listed site, much to my surprise. i've only been doing this web thing since late April and submitted my site to Google et al. Certainly to begin with I didn't show up at all on google when searched for. i still appear nowhere on the results for a generalised "street photography" search, but I suppose it's VERY early days. What I did recently was contact the leading listed sites for street photography and arranged a mutual link exchange. Will this have had the magic effect on my listing?

Cheers, Lol

There really isn't anything that will have a magic effect on your listing. SEO comes down to hard work and taking the time to optimize your pages and build links. When you first searched for the longer term I would guess Google hadn't yet indexed your site which is why you couldn't find it.

Once they indexed it you were found right away. It's not a particularly competitive term which is why it was easy to get listed. Your page title alone was probably enough to guarantee the top listing.

It's ok to do link exchanges, but you really should keep them to a small percentage of your overall links. Matt Cutt's of Google confirmed earlier this week that Google doesn't give much weight to reciprocal links. Ideally you want one-way incoming links. The kind where you don't link back to the site linking to you.

Here's the post on Matt's blog if you want to see http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/indexing-timeline/

I want to agree with vangogh. I have seen it many times that brand new sites got indexed and even received PR within a very short period of time. Plus these sites got 1st page in Google and MSN quickly.

That is why I more and more say that Google sandbox is a myth. Yes, many people have to wait before their sites are indexed. But you can make this process much faster and easier if you use modern technologies (RSS, sitemaps, etc.)
