ok so i have noticed from quite some time that the keyword density tool from seomoz is reporting edu, mil & gov links. does this links that point to your site have more importance that other domains like .com, .co.uk, .ro?

I would think only if your site was eductaion related, militaty related, or government related. It's relevance that's important in links.

lighe like I said it depends on your site how important those links will be. For example my site has nothing to do with the military so a link back from a site with the .mil extension isn't going to mean much for my site. Search engines won't see it as relevant and I wouldn't expect people visiting a military site to click on a link that talks about web hosting. They might be interested in both, but I wouldn't expect a lot of clicks from that site. Therefore I won't be trying to get that site to link to mine. If they do great, but I'm not going to spend my time working to get that link.

I will spend time trying to get links on sites that talk about web hosting or web design or search engine optimiztion, because those are the subjects my site is about and a link from a site like that will be relevant. I would think that people visiting a site discussing how to design a website will probabaly be interested in where they can host a site and would be much more likely to click on a link to my site. That's because the link is relevant to the content on the site they are visiting.

In your case you want to make a joke site. Relevant links will be things like other joke sites. Or maybe sites that are simply for entertainment purposes. If you have jokes that are poking fun of the government or are political in nature then a link from .gov will probably be relevant. If all your jokes are about people's driving skills than a link from .gov isn't going to be relevant.

Like Chris said why would you be surprised that students link to joke sites. I would think that would be common and also a good source for your traffic. Regardless of whether it helps you with a search engine those links will probably be good for you site since students will be looking at them and probably more likely to click on a link to a joke site.

When you look for links for your site don't necessarily think about search engines. Think about whether people on that site will be likely to click on the link to your site. That's where traffic will come from and chances are if the people on those sites will click your link the search engines will consider it relevant.
