Hi!

Wonder if anyone can help me out with this query. I designed the site for my firm - trade mark attorneys. The site has been up and running about a year or so now, and oh so slowly (because I don't have time or money to spend on it) it is starting to show up when I search for it and hopefully now we have got listed on DMOZ that will pick up even more.

BUT - what I would like to know is this. When I go to "Ask Jeeves" and search for the first two words of my company name, it finds me no problem, but it lists SO many pages before the main home page - why? First up is the legal statement, which just deals with data protection etc. All my enquiry forms are indexed before the home page too.

I may be being very stupid, but I don't understand why it doesn't just show the home page first? And as this is what I want it to do what can I do to change things?

Any ideas?

I'm guessing that when you search Ask Jeeves that it sorts the output by how times the words you searched for show up in the page. Your legal statement probably contains the first two words of your company name more often then your home page.

Anacrusis is right. Your legal statement mentions the company name many more times than the home page. The most important place being in the page title.

Google lists your home page first. Most of the other search engines don't. They split between listing the legal statement and about us page first. It looks like all the pages that are showing up above the home page in the search engines all use the company name in the title.

If you want the home page to show up first I'd suggest changing the home page title to include the company name and preferably have that in the beginning of the title. If that's not enough to move the home page first in the search engines you'll probably need to add the company more in the content of the page.
