What is a good Page Rank?

My site has been at a PR4 for about 6 months (site is 10 months old). Is this considered good for the time it's been up? Like many others in this forum, the site ranks well in Yahoo and MSN for targeted keywords, but in Google, it's like I don't even exist (other than a top 10 list for one key phrase). Is it the "sandbox" at work again?

Google links: 164
Yahoo links: 30
MSN links: 27

Hi Wilbury,
It's really good that your website achieved a PR of 4 in such a short span of time. Last month Google has updated its algorithm and because of that many site's PR got changed on a positive side. I believe sandbox effect is applied on those sites which are pretty new, and after that only sites are given a PR . As your site has already got a PR of 4 so I think its out of sandbox phase. You need to build up your link popularity.

Wilbury,

Well done on your 4 so far - You can increase this ready for the next update if you spend some time now gaining links to your site. Good links to your site will push you higher. Here are some ideas:-

A good way to start is to get your site listed in DMOZ.org this has the potential of up to 4000 links to your site due to the vast number of sites that feed off its data. It will take a while to get in.

If you cant get in dmoz, or at least whilst you are waiting to get in, work on getting your site in more directory sites, again this will add to back links.

Then work on trying to exchange links with "sites relevent to your site content" Dont exchange with ANY site, an exchange with a bad site will do you more harm than good.

Try to get some news articles about your site out, again this helps, the engines love news articles and often news sites have high rank to start with which will pass over to you

Always provide a link to your site in your signiture where possible on these forums and anchor text will help the most. This is a simple way to get a good link. Just in this reply (the page being a 2 ) by replying to you and adding my signiture, i have gained an extra one way anchor text link.

All this will take time and its said that to go from a 4 to a 5 is fives times as hard to do but links from higher rank sites will push you higher quicker.

Good luck to you, great start.

RichTC,

Thanks for all of the good suggestions. I didn't realize how difficult it is to achieve a higher Page Rank. it's good to know that I'm not alone!

I've tried registering the site with DMOZ in November 2004 but still have not had any luck getting in. I posted a couple queries in their forums (according to their rules), but was told that the site is still waiting to be reviewed. That was several months ago. Of course, since then the rules have changed and now we cannot post any further inquiries. It looks like DMOZ is a lost cause. That is unfortunate because I know how important it is for ranking well with Google.

In looking at competitor sites with better rankings (for search terms), a DMOZ listing appears to be the distinguishing factor. Many other sites with poor design, poor content, little content, few pages, no/poor page titles, poor meta descriptions, few links, few keyword appearances, etc. appear way before my site even though I've tried optimizing properly. The only ways they compare favorably is in their DMOZ listing and the amount of time their site has been live.

Good page rank is the page rank that you cannot see.

I have PR 6 sites that are getting killed by my PR 0 sites in the same market. PR is only good for link exchanges or sales IMHO.

I started optimizing my site in June, I had a pr0, now it is pr3 but on other pages it is 4 :s

Google sucks for me too

Back links

Google - 40
msn - 1324
yahoo - 472

I rank no1 in most cases of keywords in msn and yahoo but i am not existant in google, I have a dmoz listing as well

I think dmoz is good, but I dont think it is very relevant to google until the google directory updates and includes your link. I will see when this happens!

Also, is it just me or have other people noticed google giving higher page rank and better rankings to old sites, despite their crappy look?

From what I've seen PR is just what Google rates your site as. Hence Page Rank, people say it is not important, which is true, only in the sense that Page Rank isn’t updated very often and sometimes doesn’t reflect your actual search engine ranking. You have an actual page rank hidden inside Google’s system. The visible page rank could take many months to show up if you don’t have one, or if you do, it could take many months to change. Visible page rank could be important again if Google updated it more often.

When people say PR is not very important, what that means, at least IMO is, if you have a cartoon website, and you get 100 cooking sites PR3-4 link to you. This will increase your PR. But in search engines, this will not help you as much as 20-40 kids websites, or children oriented websites that have 2-3PR and will not increase your PR as much.

Google will find keywords that your link partners link to you with, and also keywords that are on your link partners website, and use them to shape the category of your site.

So, if you are not going after the search engine rankings as much as PR then go link crazy blindly linking to everyone, this will increase your PR quicker then taking the time and finding good link partners. The ONLY reason I could think of you actually wanting to do this would be if your "children’s" sites didn’t want to link to you because your PR is too low, so what you would have to do is raise it with irrelevant links first, once Google updates it, drop your irrelevant link partners and go find the relevant ones that will link to you now, since you have some PR.

If you want to get a higher search engine ranking, forget about PR and find some decent relevant link exchanges. IMO 5-10 PR2-3 sites that are relevant are better then 2 PR6-7 sites that have nothing to do with you or your service/products. Research keyword search counts for your topic through a keyword suggestion tool: http://inventory.overture.com/ Once you find some high traffic keywords that meet your service/product, use them in your anchor text and description in your link exchange.

There are obviously many more things you can do, this is the art of search engine optimization, but this should get you off your feet.

If you don’t already have a link exchange manager look into: http://www.MyLinking.com, this will make your link exchange life easier.

rehash ... I am wondering what your site's url is that is sandboxed with a pr6 ... I have never heard of such a thing. Sandboxing takes place with new sites and new sites don't just get a pr of 6 right away ... that takes time ... months even years.

I'm trying to get bots to come to my site for over 2 weeks now. So far, just MSN. I've done just about everything possible. I guess I just have to wait...

A technique I discovered on getting onto google is. I use this tool available here http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/, and enter any site that's ranking higher then mine. I then check to see which sites Google shows are linking to them. I then look through the sites and see if there's any I can get my site listed on. If there is, I begin submitting my sites to as many as possible.

Eventually what happens is, your site will inadvertly get indexed by Google. Make sure you have a robots.txt file in your home directory.

I did this with great success. A competitor of mine's site was listed in a directory that was getting pulled up into the top five on Google for a specific search. So I went and listed my site on that site as well. My site title now shows up.

From your portfolio i can see that all the projects that you have completed have the link to your site this is why you have a pagerank of 3

Here is a question: How do you bring back the sandboxed site?
It is sad that a new site suddenly gets to the last pages of the serps just because it is relatively new. When does sandboxing occur by the way?
