Here is the wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Internet

Alexa uses their toolbar to give them "real" (but it's not) traffic numbers. But, they do not rate non Alexa users.

So, it's not really that accurate. I get about 10,000 unique visitors to my website theshowmaker.com a month and am ranked WAY lower than a friend that really does not have that much traffic but most of his traffic seems to have the Alexa tool bar installed.

They use other sources for traffic figures.....but i wonder sometimes. I have dropped 19 million spots in the last 3 months but i have been receiving a lot more traffic. Go figure?

Alexa ranking is determined with the help of traffic. It represents the amount of traffic in last 3 months and this is how rank is calculated. There are other factors which are considered.

Like the biggest one you ommitted - that only a small fraction of the surfing world have the Alexa toolbar installed. This makes Alexa useless for the majority of sites.

Yeah ignore the alexa rankings. It is very skewed towards technology & webmaster sites.

It shows the ranking of websites. These days I believe the alexa ranking because they are somewhat accurate. They also show the keywords the website is getting the traffic for and it's kind of accurate as well.

I couldn't agree more. I personally think Alexa has lost alot of meaning over the years. I remember when first starting out it was a big deal and now I hardly hear about it.

Basically, its where some people (me not included) gets to check their sites traffic. But as for me, I really don't bother wasting my time for this cause its not accurate. so what's the point, right..
