search engine friendly url is there is a keyword of some related thing in the url instead of many numbers or scripty url. therefore SEO friendly urls are always better than them. it help you to increase your SERP position

I agree w/ 000. Having a keyword friendly URL is better than a non-keyword. Look at CivilWar.com - not a great site - I see better SEO'd civil war sites out there - but they are in #1 position because mostly of their URL.

URL should be search engine friendly and if the url is itself diverting the traffic to the said keyword in url then it is really a beneficial thing. But by having just a search engine friendly url, the thing is not completed.. you have to do a lot many of seo technique to divert the most traffic as well..

I've never noticed any difference. One customer of mine ran dynamic URL's for his shopping cart site and got decent serach result positions with no problem. Until they sold the business they had position 1-3 for several very highly competitive search phrases. All they did was spent time writing good headings and text copy, and generally organising their sites structure to be user friendly, very few backlinks (about 20 I think), no human friednly URL's, just common sense.

Yeah it does make a difference. Always better to be keyword rich but not spam. Those who think it does not help can check out the SEOMoz article on SEO factors.

You should try to make your urls as short as you can because they will get a higher click through ratio in the search engines. I don't really believe that it will affect the way the page is being ranked though. If an ugly looking URL is getting a lot of links for a certain keyword, it is still the most relevant and should still get the number one spot.

What?
Do you think people really care what the URL looks like when they are clicking on a search result?

People look at the text of the link and the description below it. Nobody cares how ugly the URL is when clicking a search result.

Believe me, they care. The domain has a lot to do with it also. If it looks ugly and unprofessional, many searchers pass it up and don't click.

URLs are the core of web sites. If URLs are search engine friendly then your 50% work is completed. If URLs are OK then work for content and title to get higher ranking in major search engines.

Thanks for reading.
Search engine friendly urls are those that contains the the keywords in the page url. For example, in a wordpress blog it is essential to change the permalinks of your entire blog to have the keywords in the url.

Example:

http://www.domain.com/my-keyword <-- great url

The search engines will see and index this page as a page optimized for "my keyword" so you will rank for "my keyword" provided that you have enough SEO onsite and off.

--vs--

http://www.domain.com/p=6 <-- very nasty!!

Sure did the readers know what you are talking about in your page because they read it but the search engines won't recognize what you are talking about. Are you talking about "p6"??? Even if you have good SEO on your blog post you still can't rank well for your keyword in that way. It will rank but it will take time unlike having "Friendly URLs".

Hope that helps.

Bonus points for providing a citation.

I stand corrected.
