My new corporate website is to target small businesses in the UK. Would it be a good idea to purchase a domain such as this?

Im hoping this would come up as a search result for 'small business website design'...

... or is buying additional domains purely for this reason normally considered a waste?

Depends what your current set up is. You'd have to promote the new domain, so if you're already promoting an existing domain, that's twice the workload. Is the return on doing all that extra work worth it? Personally, I wouldn't bother. I'd just create new pages on my existing site to target additional phrases - if they were in some way related to what the site was about.

It is not a waste if you optimize the site for the main reason. If you have additional site, you can spread the word out from many sources.

If your main reason for buying the second domain is to give additional backlink to your main site, it may be waste of effort and money if you host it on other ip. If you are going to host it on the same IP, that would not count well.

Try to submit lots of articles to directories and that would boost up your rankings.

if your new business offer is relevant to your old one then it will be wise to give links from already working domain and redirecting to targeted page.you can optimize for locality of your targeted audience to generate potential customer easily.

Getting a new domain that will show the same website is bad for your rankings. You should create landing pages for other keywords and promote them with deep links (link that point to a very specific page like www.domain.com/folder/page.html).

The more deep links your site has the better it will rank. Google see links to www.domain.com a bit more spammy then links to www.domain.com/page.html because deep links are more natural and have less chance to come from link exchange.
