I think the point is NOT that PageRank is unimportant

and NOT that PageRank is of ultimate importance

BUT PageRank IS one of a number of factors that
Google will assess to determine the relevance
of your page in the context of any given set of search
terms.

If it was completely unimportant I don't think we
would see so many articles and videos by Matt
Cutts explaining how it is calculated.

The valuable message I think is that for link building
purposes Search Relevant sites are the ones
you should be targeting.

I don't understand why people are getting rid of PR as links for a website is also considered in getting SERP's. I think everyone knows this then how can this article can be right?

USe PR as one of your guides, but top advice is to people with an obsession about it. Building PR is not the objective - rankings and traffic conversion are.
