Alexa rank is crap. It doesn't show the popularity of a site at all. I have two sites. One gets more traffic than the other and more page views per unique visit but Alexa ranks the one that gets less traffic higher
Exactly! I have noticed the same across my sites! Despite the improvements Alexa has imposed last year, it is still way off!
Alexa rank, is a very rough guide, the weekly number (if you get one), seem almost completely random. The number of incoming links doesn't seem to update correctly, and shows a different value if you click on it. But it does seem on the long term, to reflect the populatity and ammount of linkbuilding work you've done on your site. I'm addicted to checking my Alexa rank. But it seems poorly correlated to what i'll earn though adsense.
Yup, I base my blog's optimization on Alexa. Rather than focusing on PR, I'd like to get more traffic, second is backlinks of course.
Why don't you use G Webmaster tools or something? If you are sure the bulk of your visitors have alexa's toolbar installed, then that's all good, but frankly I doubt they do.

Yeah I know they don't have Alexa installed on their browser
I also use Analytics and StatCounter for my blog...
Alexa Rank is how many visitors your website gets in relation to all other websites on the Internet.
You are aiming to get a high Google Pagerank (commonly refered to as PR) and a low Alexa Rank.
the two goals in SEO are to increase your websites position in the search engine results pages(SERP’s) and increase website traffic.
Google Pagerank represents how important your website is compared to all other websites,so i think alexa rankings is not so important.
I too believe in alexa ranking these days. If my rankings change, the change is shown in the alexa ranking. So I trust this tool. I can also judge other website and their traffic with the help of alexa rankings. There are no other tools which I think is useful for this purpose.
Well, it surely doesn't hurt to have a good alexa ranking as it is still used as a measurement tool. But I do agree with most of you on this topic, that its results are very skewed. Google Analytics seem to be the most accurate so far for us.
I agree, I don't really find alexa important. I don't even mind checking.lol And in my opinion even my PR. It's better to just use the time promoting or doing seo rather than keep checking my rankings there.
Alexa has been used to know the PR of a site and there have been quite a few sites which are already registered. However, I still find it quite unfair since not all have registered w/ Alexa. It's quite bias actually.
For me, Alexa Rank matters but not so important for the same reason they have stated above--- it only crawls those browsers with alexa toolbars. It helps with one's website popularity though!
