I look through various web design and SEO forums each day and it's common to see posts by people talking about tricks and quick ways to get results.

Usually the first question I get (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) after I launch a website for a client is: "So how do I get to the top of Google?" Most of time, I want to strangle these people. But then again, I can't blame them because there are so many SEO companies out there that promise fast results and huge returns, so it's no wonder they think it works like that.

It's also frustrating because I see people post these "tricks" on forums, and I see tons of people who obviously don't know anything about how search engines work eat them up.

With that said, whenever you read about one of these easy, fast, quick, simple, or sure-thing tricks to increase rankings, remember to take it with a grain of salt and do your own research.

I always ask myself, "is this natural". Is it something that would naturally occur.

And great article, the one about ethics and blog comments. Although I do often go to these blogs intentionally for back-links, I will only comment if I can find something I really have an opinion on or something useful to ad. If I can't find something then I won't comment. It's not worth it because 1, i wouldn't want someone to spam my blog, and 2 it will probably be deleted anyway.

I think if people would stop worrying about trying to make the web revolve around themselves and actually participate in this world wide community, they'd find greater success.

Would anybody try to "trick" their friends in these ways?

The web isn't about you, me, or the other guy. It's about us.
I think the Cluetrain Manifesto really puts it all into perspective.

For me, if SEO companies would say that they will give or promise to me FAST results... huh! They're kidding. SEO is a long term process. Some say it is "organic" and I personally agree with them. Organic means... it will take quite some times before they can see some results... (and I'm not talking about HUGE results.)

I agree that SEO isn't a quick process.
At the same time I understand those people who offer quick SEO services. They want to make as much money as just possible. They don't really care what they promise. They know that people are ready to pay for getting their web sites to good positions in Google and other search engines.
I think each person who pays money for quick SEO services should know what he pays money for. One shouldn't be lazy to read about SEO and learn what it's all about.
I bet if one spend some hours reading SEO articles and forum posts on SEO he won't pay money for something that can't be achieved as soon as it is promised.
