Hi,

i have site with more than 5000 visitors per day but only about 10% of them come from search engines. So i would like to make my urls more SEO friendly
My site is about software downloads.

Here are three URL models which i have in mind:

1) www.name.com/windows-software/program-name-ID.html

2) www.name.com/software/program-name-ID.html

3) www.name.com/software-program-name-id.html

Which one should I use

It will make no difference AT ALL.

I have read that it is the best to have URL which doesn't have lots of "/" (folders). So link 3 would be the best solution.
But I have also read somewhere that is good to have folder organization if You have lots of links with similar main keyword like "program" and "game". So programs links will have "program" folder and games will have "games" folder.

So I don't know which to use

Lots of "/" is not 3.. It's 30.. In your scenario it simply doesn't matter..

Yep it's definitely good to have a folder "organisation", but that's nothing to do with SEO!

I agree with chrishirst that it doesn't matter, but I certainly prefer #1. It looks better organized.

Remember to have good linking structure and categorizing... don't use too many subfolders for web crawlers will not fully index your site. Use major subcategory for each section, which is the one you can build links.

I would suggest you to go with the second one, the short URL is the best and easy to remeber.

Wrong, SE crawlers DO NOT KNOW what the folder structure is.

Now i use folder organisation structure but all my links have 4 folders in it.
That wasn't very good solution

Ok. Lest say that i use one of this:

2) www.name.com/software/program-name-ID.html

3) www.name.com/software-program-name-id.htm

Should i use:
program-name-ID.html
or
ID-program-name.html

it is better to base it on your folder structure, but if I have to choose number 2 looks more proper!

where is the 90% came from?

Direct traffic or from other sites. Sometimes i have about 10 000 visitors and only 600 from search engines.

I have lots of PR5, PR6 and PR7 one-way links but it seams that my link structure or something else is wrong. It may be because i have changed link structure few times without redirecting to new pages, changed language of site and similar...
So now I wan't to do good SEO job because my site can get lots of visitors from search engines too

the URI is so little to do with SEO you are risking the loss of the traffic value from what are seemingly VERY GOOD links that are actually sending traffic.

Every time you change the URI structure of a site you damage search engine results, changing without a redirect will destroy them.

Changing URIs for no good reason is NOT "doing a good SEO job", it's quite the reverse in fact.

Another totally overrated consideration.

As long as you try not to use query strings, you should be alright

I think Decaf has suggested the best variant. I also like the first URL you've shown us. Though, I don't think it's necessary to specify program ID

www.name.com/software-program-name-id.html This one is better becuase number of click from home page is less than others.
