Seo doesn't keep getting more difficult - the number of websites keeps rising, that's all. Well think about it. You get your lizard site ranked as one of the most relevant lizard sites around, you go and have a cup of tea, 4 more lizard sites are invented - that's a slightly bigger list of websites about lizards in existence and all the work you did was to get it as high as possible within the world sans those new lizard sites. Give it 2 years - 100s of new lizard sites.
That's all it probably is that's getting you down. Have you thought of becoming a video producer? That's starting to be a well paid job. There are places, like break dot com i think, who even pay up to a few 1000 dollars to you if you make a decent 10 minute video. The reason is they can milk many 10s of 1000s off that video from the adrevenue their traffic to it will generate. But it's worth focusing on the candy, as cartman would say. If you make a video you will be (1) not bored (2) potentially well paid
Why not lay down your seo and be a video maker? Maybe I'm just trying to reduce the competition one person at a time! Why not, eh? Go on, try video, or if that fails I know a guy who used to be paid to be a dancer in nightclubs - to drum up business. I never met an actual beach tester, but maybe they exist. ALL the things you could do that aren't SEO and aren't nasty and hairy like SEO - go on. One hundred million green bottles (metaphorical - seo executives) standing on the wall and if one green bottle - should go and work somewhere else - there'll be 99,999,999 green bottles standing on the wall...
