SEO is difficult if you have a website that does not provide anything of value. People love to just stick up a website in ultra competitive areas and then they don't provide anything to set themselves apart. If you just copy somebody else your not going to get very far. If you make an interesting website that offers a different way of doing things you will have a better chance.
A website that is unique and is part of a real business is a lot easier. A website should be treated as a business.

SEO is just a combination of patients and persistence with a twist of research. It's not necessarily hard you just follow the book of SEO knowledge.

Well, it is "hard" because 99% people going into the business think they are going to make their make "money blog informations" site tonight, and tomorow start seeing tons of money rolling in.
It takes persistance, and dedication which is the part that 99% of people don't have. It is also hard, because there are a ton of people doing it so as far as creating sites many niches get obliterated as soon a the open up. Also, the fact that money can buy seo makes it hard. My new site uses the best possible SEO practices I know. Many things done better for SEO than Geico's site. Why does theirs rank higher? Because instead of submitting do a directory, they right sombody a check for incredible amounts to get 1000s of content relevant in context links to their site all at one shot. Can't even compete with that.

If a person is in the field of SEO and he or she only wants immediate results and do not want to constantly learn things on how to do a proper SEO then I can say it will surely be hard for them doing SEO.

one more hard thing about SEO is that people have different opinions on which is best and which is not for your site, the good thing is that we can decide for ourselves and test those as well, we also have the best access to information in the world for more references.. one more hard thing is that people have access to this and competitors are considering them as well.

Good post, good point.
I have 2 sites, one of which I have never done SEO on. The html is a mess, never begged a link, no idea about the keyword ratios, no idea whether I used h1, h2 or h57 (joke) for my titles. Menu is in javascript, no alt on images, etc etc. That site is way up for most of the relevant keyword searches in google and has PR4 (if you care about such things - I don't, in fact I didn't know it had pr4 until just now when I looked for the purpose of this post!). It was the first site I ever made in my life and it's pants in terms of SEO, but it is up there because it offers something unique and it is my business.
Forget SEO - go and write some content.
The other site is my hobby, and is in my siggy. I have spent some time on SEO and have increased my rankings on some keywords, but the one I want "music theory" I am still hovering around no.99 on google. But, I don't care! I just write more content and I move up a bit each week.

I truly don't hate any of it. I like it because it is a challenge. And challenges cause you to gain more knowledge than you previously had about whatever you were trying accomplish, no matter whether it be SEO or things in life period.

I think that it happens not just in SEO, everything is difficult in the beginning, but to other things and in SEO, patience and time is just what we need to overcome challenges like this in the beginning..

Thanks, I needed to read that. It seems that learning about seo is a double-edged sword. You can use it to improve your rankings, which helps obviously, but won't solve all your problems. Or you can get so consumed by it that you neglect actually putting in the time to write unique and valuable content, which, as you have shown, are actually *very* important.

SEO may appear difficult at first, but once you have accumulated enough expertise and are perfectly aware of all the musts and don'ts, once you have worked out a coherent system to stick to, then things really start looking up. Just don't lose heart and keep in touch with the latest developments.
