There are many forum members who are very quick to expound their "knowledge" on SEO in many threads, whilst ably demonstrating what they do actually know could fit into a single post.
BTW. We can spot the reasoning behind that and forum signatures aren't that helpful! but I digress.

I've just replied to several threads in a couple of other forums and here at WMT in different categories where many answers would be found simply by using the medium the questioners purport (usually by a signature link or six) that they are "experts" in.
Yes that's right, the SEARCH ENGINES!

Now; have you ever thought that if you actually learned how to use Internet search engines properly. That is, as a searcher looking for information, it might even help you to understand how to optimise and/or market using the SEs as a medium?

looking for a forum on rabbit breeding? forum "breeding rabbits"
but only in the UK? inurl:.uk forum "breeding rabbits"

A directory of zoo suppliers? directory "zoo suppliers"

Don't just ask a question and wait for somebody to answer. Go and LOOK for what you want. You might just be surprised at what you actually get from it!

Not claimimg to be an SEO expert but having done some reading, using the method suggested by Chrishirst (which is not as tasking as many may think) I find it laughable what people actually post who claim to be experts - acording to their sig at least.

I reakon you should sticky this as required reading for people claimimg to know what they're doing SEO wise who go on to make fools of themselves by posting and commenting on stuff that even I as a novice can see shows great whopping holes in their so called 'expert' status.

are you kidding?? sig links are great for high SERPS

if you can not notice the <!-- sig --> comments around your sig i am sure the search engines can - they are not as dumb as you. The only reason to place forum signature links is to get click through visitors.

If people would take the time to read what was wrote they would notice I was refering to the fact that people who claim to SEO experts in their sig ask questions about SEO that defunks their expert status.

Meaning: if they knew half as much as their sig claimed, they wouldn't be asking stupid questions.

vey good post. while i'm a new member here, i have been frequenting to other popular webmaster forums for a while. it bothers me to see so called SEO experts starting a thread with lame question. whats most disturbing is, they say they are helping their clients and need to know the info (really feel sorry for the clients). the kind of questions are asked, forget an SEO expert of professional, even an SEO newbie would know the answer.

another disturbing thing is when people dont read the OP and just make a lame comment, like we see that even on this post. i guess anything to increase the post count

This doesn't just apply to so called "SEO Experts"... I see a lot of people advertising for "Professional Web Design" and then they ask a question like "What is a div?" or "How can I make a page without html using only CSS?" Lol... Just cracks me up!

Just for reference I can't even begin to tell you how many times someone here asked a question and I had no idea what the answer was. I took a few words from their question, typed in a query, and within a minute had an answer for them and learned something in the process.

Search engines are your friends. If you can't use one you have no business selling any service related to search.

You'll also find that any question you have that you can find an answer to without asking is a question you won't ever have to ask again.

I don't know how many times I've pasted someone's topic title into Google to find an answer. Usually it is quite an accurate one. Sometimes my answer is nothing but a link to what they should have been searching for in the first place.

However, on a different topic, does anyone know a florist in Chicago?

Yeah absolutely. I think its even worse in the SEO field - people will have a link to their own 'SEO Services' site sitting in their signature whilst asking "Why is my site not ranking well?"

Or even better, they could be going round the forum offering choice pieces of advice such as, oooh I dunno, "Get more backlinks"

Ah thats where you're wrong - I saw someone reply to that question the other day with a phrase so ingenious its changed my entire perspective on SEO: "get more backlinks"

What are these magical things called backlinks (backlinkz?) you both mention? Are they the secret to good PR optimalization?
