just as useless

There is NO "boost" given to any particular TLD!

This is true, but the kind of backlinks that are good (aside from the obvious relevance of the content) are from pages/sites/domains that the search engines trust. This can be anything from valid markup, to age of domain, to consistently good content and high ranking. I think that the TLDs that were mentioned above are basically more likely to have all of these things due to the nature of the subject. But no, as far as I know there is no weight given to the .edu, .gov or .org domains

It is widely accepted that .edu and .gov backlinks carry a larger weight for search engine algorithms. Despite the fact that Google has never admitted it (sometimes it even neglected) most SEO and online marketing experts would confirm that .edu and .gov links outperform other extensions in terms of search ranking juice

Why would they "admit" something that doesn't exist???

Several of the Googlers has stated that it ISN'T the case.

Maybe you should stop reading speculative drivel by self proclaimed "experts"

You could both be right...
There might not be anything in the algorithms that weights any particular TLD,
but by their very nature .edu and .gov (since not just ANYONE can get them), the percentage of sites that have higher PR/trust will be higher than other TLDs.

Matt Cutts: Typically, our policy is: a link is a link, is a link; wherever that link's worth is, that is the worth that we give it. Some people ask about links from DMOZ, links from .edu or links from .gov, and they say: "Isn't there some sort of boost? Isn't a link better if it comes from a .edu?" The short answer is: no, it is not. It is just .edu links tend to have higher PageRank, because more people link to .edu's or .gov's.
There is nothing in the algorithm itself, though, that says: oh, .edu - give that link more weight.

Stephan Spencer: Yes. Which is what I would expect that SEOs would have already realized.

Matt Cutts: Well, you would be surprised how many are like: "Oh, I have to get .edu links because they are better." You can have a useless .edu link just like you can have a great .com link.
