I have this website and I put alot of time and effort in it to make it work. I am afraid that some day some hosting compagny might take it over (steal that website from me). What can I do to protect my website from leaving my property?

If you are that paranoid, DON'T HAVE A WEBSITE!

Ensure that it is registered IN YOUR NAME not the hosting oompany or designer

I thought about making 2 websites that are identical. Then if 1 website is taken over, I will still have 1 left.

Well, most website are worth almost nothing. For example websites that serve only as a presentation of yourself. But if you really have a big website and you put alot of time and effort and also a great amount of money in it; You want to protect it. Just like any property. You don't want thieves to hyjack your car. You don't want someone to take over your house and your bank account safe, so all these things are secured and regulated well. The same with website.

No, what he is saying is that if you register your domain at godaddy host it at lunarpages.. Or any other combination that you like.. But do not do things like buy your domain name from Ted's Domainer Company, letting Ted put his information in the admin slot for the contacts, and then host it with Ted's Hosting Company..

Threats and risks cant be avoid... Hackers cant be stop but they can be prevent and fight. How? Amm... Don't know how, too.

I wouldn't do that if I were you because SE's will see those website as duplicates and it will hurt your ranking.

Always have a good backup, is your site is taken over you can always put the backup site in another server. Be very carefull with the application security and use a serious hosting company.

Yes I believe that its better to have different hosting and domain company. As christhirst said it shoul be registered in your name.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you're with a reputable company, they won't want to and legally can't take over your site.

Having spent a lot of money on a web site doesn't make it worth anything, especially to someone who might steal it! It's not at all just like any property. A person will take your car, turn around, sell it to somebody else, and profit. That isn't exactly how "intellectual" property works.

I can understand having spent a lot of effort and wanting that not to be wasted. But that doesn't translate to other people (particularly a hosting company) having the motive to steal your web site.

Ya, thats what I thought when I saw this thread. But what the hosts that do that are doing is extortion because the site is only of value to you.

Most brick and mortar business that are sold require the founders to stick around for a year. Without their knowledge and contacts the probability of success goes way down.

Same for a website. Its pretty difficult to buy someone elses site (or steal it) and make money from it.

I don't understand what you mean by taken over. Do you mean hacking the site and name and making it their own, or do you mean making a duplicate and competing against you?
