Hi guys,

Within the last month or 2 i made a site on office live small buisness (OLSB). i used thier domain name with the subdomain that i got to chose.

One of the things i did in the first week or 2 is register my domain name (for my homepage) with the major search engines including google, aol, msn, yahoo.

Still to this day none of the engines show my site as being in thier index. (using site:domain name or domain:domain name syntax)

Im wondering, without paying for ad's or anyting...is there any way for free to at least show up in the results in some form. (i dont care if its in 9 million'th place in the results)

Also i dont understand when people talk about getting your link on other pages, how do you do that? Do i just send the site a nice lil email requesting them to host my link or something? Do i offer to trade links and add thier link to my page as well?

Does having your link in non related sites like forums or blogs have any impact on your ranking or inclusion in the SE index?

Also are there any good sites that offer for free to simply host links based on catagory or something? (id be computer related, specifically video editing).

Thanks.

First off, if this is a business you are serious about, get your own domain name and hosting. It will be much less painful than if (when) you need to move it at a later stage.

You can do those if you like being ignored or insulted or possibly reported for UCE (spam)

Yep hundreds of thousands of them. Some good ones, lots of mediocre ones, and hundreds of thousands of crap ones.
They are called directories

Ok if soliciting linkkage is not apropriate then how do people get thier links on others pages...after pokeing around on the internet many people were saying not to even bother with registering with search engines, but to get your link on other pages.

Yea i got my own domain and host a few days back but have not developed a site to use there (found out to my disapointment that i cannot transfer my OLSB site over, least not easily...and that i probably dont want to anyway)

As for directories, can you recommend 2-3 that you think are reputable and popular?

haha, I asked myself the same question at first. Then I realized that no, what you did did not submit the site. You need to create an account for each of the bookmark/directory you want to submit your website in. Then only once you do the "click, it reloads with the info on the right", click on "post" next to the SB you want and it will start another tab where you have to put the code that proves that you are human. Basically, you still have to do the same steps as a manual submission expect that this website contains all the links under one page so it is faster. You would have had to create an account in each of them anyway.

Submitting websites is time consuming. This website just allows to consume a little less. It also provides you with a good list where you can choose between different Social Bookmarkers from their PR, dofollow or not, etc...

Anyway, let me know if you have more questions about it.

another link that is pretty similar: http://www.socialmarker.com/

But I like the one I posted previously better.

In general, this will help you a small amount. Another general rule is that the easier a link is to get ("build"), the less it will help you.

What's your URL?

This is how most people get their links, http://www.domain.com. Really, it's that simple. Build them on other people's sites wherever you're able to, without asking first. That's not my advice, I'm just explaining what I've seen for how the average person does it. This is known as spam, so it's really to be avoided.

There are some sites that allow you to build links, with different levels of supervision. Most of them are directories. You can pay $300 and maybe get into Yahoo's, or $0 in the "Submit to my Directory" forum on this very site. Most of these will only bring the slightest benefit, so don't spend too much time on it.

Put your site into your signature here, and then make some meaningful contributions in places like our legal issues forum, web business, and anywhere else you're able. Ask more questions about what you need to learn. Those links will be worth very, very little in terms of how the search engines value them, but if you get noticed by other people with a genuine interest, you've earned a little bit of name recognition and reputation.

Check the Submit your link forum on this site for many different free directories.

You could also add a signature to your email with a link to your website. This way, every time you add a relevant comment (do not spam), it will create a link back to your website.
The good thing is: you learn at the same time as building link instead of the boring semi-manual submission where all you have to do is "prove you are human" by typing the code that you can't read half of the time because they hide it too well.

This may come as a shock, but Google Bot doesn't read your hotmail.

The first step in getting other sites to link to you is creating content that people want to link to. Like John and Julien suggested add a forum signature which includes a link back to your site.

The signature link won't be the best link in the world, but it gives us a chance to visit your site and if you have good content some of us here will link to it.

It's easier to link to informational content than it is to link to sales copy. It's one reason people create blogs for their site. A blog isn't magic, but when done writing blogging means you'll be creating content.

Things like directories are one source of links, but the return is limited. Most directories are probably junk.

The best thing to do is create the best content you can to give people a reason to both visit your site and link to it. Then become involved in the web at large. Participate on other people's sites. Build relationships with bloggers on your topic.

The more you can interact with the web, the more the web will interact with you.
