Try forgetting about search engines for a moment.
Let's say you have a good (honest) review about something people are interested in (that is also relevant to your site). People interested in whatever the review is about share the review with their friends and family. They start linking to you...
Now, you have targeted organic traffic. This is much better than search engine ranking.
Why?
- it won't change when an algorithm changes
- it comes from a multitude of sources, instead of one
- it comes from people (your community) not a machine
I posted a review of Eclipse Ganymede recently. It brought thousands of visitors (per day). Only about 5% from SE's the other 95% came from other people's sites and several social networks. That's the best kind of traffic. Though, I wasn't doing it for the traffic. I was just trying to get an Eclipse t-shirt
