To get more traffic for the site, Google is the best way. But for this you need to work on SEO for your site.
Google search rank for your site also depends upon the age of your site and quality content on your site. At first you might enjoy using your signature on other forums to get some traffic, and that is called as traffic from reference site. but it will last for long. The most important is how much traffic you are getting from search engines because that is the thing that last for long time. So work on SEO while you are enjoying using your signatures.

I think the best way to promote a site is do the proper link building and submit your site to major SE's and avoid those unnecessary stuff like black hat & link farms...
