Hi ... as I read Alexa changes, the claim was still using tool bar, but developed more precise (sic) way to extrapolate to non-tool bar users. Maybe not.
An anecdote about the worth of Alexa. My site hustles ideas and words, not products or services. It relies on content and writers. Convincing writers, good or known, to come aboard isn't easy. They look at PR and Alexa. If both are ok, in their view, they submit for posting; if not, they don't.
I had a moderately prominent writer lined up, a few months ago, to make regular postings. She's often on television and the tie-in was a dream come true. She agreed because of a PR4 and an Alexa of about 160,000. Before her first submission, the site Alexa dropped to about 260,000; she hesitated, as I explained it was sampling error. Then Alexa dropped to 350,000 and she vanished; her agent said she didn't want to sully her reputation, posting on a poorly rated site.
In the view, of non-webmaster types, Alexa means something as does PR.
A sad, but true, tale.
