Ok, here goes..
Page rank is determined by the number of links pointing toward that page.. The more links the higher the pagerank.. That in turn gives that page more pagerank to pass on to pages it links to.. Every page that has a link to it has page rank.. It doesn't matter how deep in your website it is, if it has links, it has pagerank.. The quality of the page itself has nothing to do with pagerank..
Second, there are two forms of pagerank.. The first is the one you see in the Google toolbar.. That little green bar means just one tick more than absolutely nothing.. Then there is the real pagerank that Google keeps track of internally every day.. That actually means something.. But since we don't know what it is, don't worry about it, just get more links..
As for your question about a mostly graphic front page, it really does help to have text on the page.. It's hard for the algorithm to read pictures for ranking purposes..
