I guess its all in the look of my page. I am really good with Dreamweaver so I can make really cool looking front pages. I don't know jack about php so getting the forums to look cool is imposable unless I find someone willing to do the phpbb style code or whatever.

Is it better to have my forums on the front page www.drysnot.com or is it better to have my forums on a sub level www.drysnot.com/forum

I know that page rank applies to the first page then once the page rank for that page gets high enough the bots dig a little deeper and find the forums but if my front page has very little text and a ton of images that will look cool to a user but be crap for a bot.

Whats better in my case front page or just forums?

Thanks

Ok, here goes..

Page rank is determined by the number of links pointing toward that page.. The more links the higher the pagerank.. That in turn gives that page more pagerank to pass on to pages it links to.. Every page that has a link to it has page rank.. It doesn't matter how deep in your website it is, if it has links, it has pagerank.. The quality of the page itself has nothing to do with pagerank..

Second, there are two forms of pagerank.. The first is the one you see in the Google toolbar.. That little green bar means just one tick more than absolutely nothing.. Then there is the real pagerank that Google keeps track of internally every day.. That actually means something.. But since we don't know what it is, don't worry about it, just get more links..

As for your question about a mostly graphic front page, it really does help to have text on the page.. It's hard for the algorithm to read pictures for ranking purposes..

Thanks for the advice. I was confused about how it worked. I didn't know that a subpage could have a higher page rank than the main page.

Thanks for the help

Ok, i think you are mixing few things here.

How do you get page rank? There are many on-page and off-page factors considered by Google to give page rank. Among those link popularity is quite big factor. That means you will get a higher page rank for the webpage with more link popularity.

And most importantly : it's (web)page rank not the (website) rank.

So you need to target your page at domain.com/forums or somewhere else for link popularity which page you want to rank higher. It could be home page or some other inside page as well.

Page rank is an indication of the relative importance of a webpage based on the number of other important webpage that links to it. PR depends on number of backlinks.

Toolbar PR is NOT an indicator of anything.

REAL PR (which we don't know the scale of or the value assigned to any page) is the value used internally by Google in their "importance" weighting. And even this is just one small part of the overall ranking algo.

I agree with chris. It's not an indicator for anything, and it's only calculated by number of backlinks.

How important is pagerank? Well it depends on:
1. Where you get it, and
2. The associated anchor text (on two fronts)

Lower impact PR
*From links within our own site
*From pages unrelated to your page's theme

High impact PR
*When pages within your search results link to your page (relevence)
*Desired anchor text (leading to the page they link to you from i.e. not 'Links Page') and in the link to your site itself.

Look for pages with decent PR and minimal links among which that PR is divided. e.g. take a link from a PR5 page with 30 links on it over a link from a PR6 page with 230 links on it.

PR has NOTHING to do with anchor text
