Hi,
First Im a newbie to SEO and hope you can help me with this little question.

I have a few keywords and I want that my site should appear on the first page or some of the first results on google when people search for those keywords. I also know the competition on those keywords are high.

So what can I do to make my site rank higher. I have added those keywords to my meta tags and site title and they also appear on some of the tutorials and articles I have on the frontpage as well as the forum and the gallery.

The question is what else can I do to make my site rank higher ? Is backlinks a keyfactor here ?

Im using the keyword tracker on digitalpoint btw

1. Do your research what kind of pharses of those keywords have highest KEI.
2. Form your page titles and headers using those.
3. Use those in the anchor text when linking to your site, including in your signature when posting in forums, groups, messages, etc.

And then do Article Submission, Directory Submission, Blogging, Forums, Ads, Press Releases. Submit to those who have high PR at least PR 3 sites.

Get some ads up on classifieds site. Most of the time, you need to write one copy and can be used across all the classifieds sites. They can drive good traffic at times and some may even provide a back link for SEO effect!

This gets me thinking about paid advertising. Many of my competive sites are runned by people with small budgets and I think I can do some advertising on those sites for a little fee.

What is the best way to advertise on those pages to gain backlinks. I was thinking of making my own textad in Openads then give them the code. I could also make a flash banner that updates with my latest headlines or I could simply use static html.

So my question is which of these 3 methods is the best for backlinking ?

KEI is Keyword Efficency Index. Its calculated on a based how many searches are performed on particular search phrase and how much competition you have. I have used Trellian SEO toolkit but they have also KeywordDiscovery service.
Still unable to post the URL to it. Why so stupid restrictions

Build lots of (off-page) quality and targeted backlinks with your keywords as anchor texts. Your on-pafe factors (meta, keyword density, etc.) should be aligned with your offline optimization...

If you have very competitive keywords and you are a newbie you have three opportunities.

1) give up
2) change your keywords to long-tailed keywords
3) don't get any traffic

Grab PR from submission sites like Squidoo, eHow, or Hubpages by writing articles on their sites and linking back to yours. Don't use duplicate content though, it has to be original.
