I've always taken the view that if anybody was good at SEO they would promote their own sites and make millions from affiliate commissions, rather than work for somebody else.

It's easy to find SEO companies that will promise you the world, at least Google anyway, then make excuses about algorithm changes when they fail to deliver. Meanwhile they are charging you by the hour.

My advice woud be to learn yourself, you probably won't do any worse and will save yourself a whole lot of money and problems.

A good SEO company will explain to you long before money is discussed that algorithm changes and the like may help or harm your rankings. If a company promises you top rankings for your keywords, make them put in writing what they consider "top rankings" to be, on which search engines these top rankings will appear, for how long (iffy), and exactly what keywords they're referring to. If you collect proposals and are unsure of who to go with, I'll take a look over them for you if you like. You want a breakdown in every proposal of exactly what services will be rendered. Good SEO services are not cheap, though, so be prepared.

Yeah, never trust a garentee. typically you want to run away from those people. Shoot for ROI based companies, goal centric companies.

i think for the rate you pay and the competition you go against in most niches you completly waisting your time.

sorry but those are my thoughts....my brother forked out $3000 for a company to do a intermediate seo for one of his website and nothing really happed....I coulnt help but laugh but unfortunatly he got ripped.

a good seo company will tell you what you can expect and give you a run down of all the technical things they did to get good results. I would say about 20-30% of seo companies are any good.

you have to be selective if you do do this.

Hey micahsc, you have a good point there which I agree with to a good degree. But I think you are missing some reasons why good SEOs might want to work for someone else:

altruism - it feels good when you get someone's site up the rankings and you see the smile on their face when they see their traffic statistics

company and fun - working as an SEO on your own stuff from home can be very lonely - it's nice to have company and talk to people. Proposing ideas to a client which can be a very creative and positive meeting - look out - I'm suggesting that work can be fun

respect - an SEO can quietly work on marketing their own blackhat sites without telling their grandmothers their URLs but you can be proud to say "hey, I ranked XXX for YYY" and garner respect from your peers

interesting challenges - I would never have thought about trying to rank for "XYZ competitive widgets" and who's in that market. This is a really interesting challenge and I'm delighted to learn more about XYZ widgets.

I'm sure there's a load more reasons why someone might want to SEO for others, but that'll do for now

Agreed. Use common sense as when hiring consultants.

I agree and disagree. Definitely, you should learn yourself - it will be useful to have a decent understanding of the process and it will help you in your work in future.

I disagree that you should not then get a specialised SEO to work for you. Why? Time and resources. Your time is probably better spent working on your ideas and business and outsourcing SEO might well be a better investment. Things like link building can be extremely time consuming and you can bet that a good SEO is going to be more efficient about it.

There are many brilliant SEOs around here. Good companies charge good money, yet they are the best bet!

It all depends on how u can catch the seo. My seo has over 15 sites ranked in the top 10 in google but got screwed by nda's. From now on he always insists that future clients let him show his work as it will grow his portfolio.
He has 2 good samples of his work if u wanna pm me to see them. He is reasonably priced , but what are the keywords you are targetting? Have u had onsite seo done yet? He is a pure link builder and he is the best at what he does.

Micahsc, some seo's overseas just dont know alot about affiliate marketing and have been in the mode of just getting top 10 rankings for clients.
My seo was like this and was one of the behind the scenes guys doing all the work for some good sized seo companies. It takes a change of mentality to start working for urself, especially if you have had companies outsource work to you for so long.

Now he is starting to work on getting his own site, and he will get it ranked in the top 10 for any seo keyword. Another words hes starting to think like a boss instead of a worker.

EZtechgroup i agree never trust a guarantee cause something can always happen. my seo never makes a written guarantee but has so far not failed in getting a top 10 ranking, but as an seo he must provide a safety cushion just in case he has his first time lol
