Yes, if you have too much of the same link text it can flag your site in the spam filters. However, the more trusted sites that link to you, the more leeway you will be given in your anchor tag variation. Generally, get as much variation as possible, it looks more natural.

Many big sites have standard links to link back from their distributed tools such as SEOCHAT.COM. These tools will most certainly provide the same anchor text beck to seochat.. but it still receives a high ranking regardless..

seochat.com has soooo many links that there is not one phrase that dominates their linking scheme. Also they have a lot of trust which would allow them to have more similar anchor text than most other sites.

I don't think it is a big concern unless you are doing some massive campaign that involves 1000s of links.

I usually start out with about 10 different phrases I ask people to link to me with. You want to have a lot to start with because all of your links will be from people you asked to link to you, hence if you ask everyone to use one or two variations it will be easy to pick up in google.

I don't think you'll get really get penalized that much. Just search for "click here" and see what comes up. Everybody links to Adobe's PDF reader by saying, if you don't have Adobe installed, click here. Now they are #1 for the phrase.

Another good example is the word "exit". This brings up Disney as number one because porn site splash pages have an Enter/Exit choice, and the exit is often linked to Dsiney.

imo, you won't get penalized at all for having the same text in the backlinks. However, I do think that it's best to change the backlink text everyone in a while, just in case.

It's very easy to solve this problem - just add functional or *junk* words into the portion of your anchors and feel safe.

I don't believe there's a penalty applied by Google, but it just doesn't give you the same boost in the SERPS if you're targeting a particular phrase, and all your IBLs have the same exact phrase.

It's best to vary the anchor text as much as you can.

Agreed, it may even make sense to start building links for some of your long tail keywords first and then then as you rank high for those then you begin to slowly add more links with your main keyword phrase(s) as anchor text.

Avoid to get too many links from same anchor text.
